Ok, so there's some problems with the site... how do we change it?

OK so first thing I dont ski but i love the site i enjoy the sport i just dont do it and i am very new to the site so i dont have much that i can really say to change anything or whatever.....

however onething that i would change is in the non-ski gabber section there is a thread about girls of some sort it has over 150 pages and in my opinion even in that section of the forum it has no business on a site that is dedicated to manly young people in there early teens what in the world does it have to do with anything related to skiing anyway yeah there are a few pics of skier chicks but that really means absolutely jack....

the only other thing that i can say is like in most of the other posts get rid of the thread count it serves no point accept to give people a reason to call me for instance a "n00b" which in all actuality is true but they call my husband that too and he has been skiing for longer than i have known him and that is going on 8 years now so i think that that really needs to go anyway thanks for letting me rant i hope that people are really reading this and taking it all into perspective

Here's the karma system for ya:

First of all, I think that every single post (not thread, post.) should be able to be rated based on how helpful/nice/overall positive it was.

When a member has received a certain number of "bad" ratings (ie 10), a notification goes out to the admins/mods, who are instantly able to see and read these 10 posts and pass their judgement.

If they find the rating to be correct, the member who posted gets one warning.

If it happens again, they get another warning and their postcount is reset to 0.

If it happens a third time, banned for life.


I also think that on every member page, there should be a way for people to vote their general impression of the member. You can only vote for the same person once a month. This way, the mods/admins can see which members are decreasing in ratings, and further explore the reason for this.

i say everyone starts with 20,00 posts then when they post 20,00 times they are at zero nad they are booted, lol

I like that, except I think that post count should still be kept track of within someone's profile, just not underneath their icon when posting.

1. How about if you can't see the membername, icon or signature until you've rated it?

2. How about more detailed membership registration where you have to fill out social ID etc...

when you say maybe deleting useless posts, some posts that yeah are infact useless to skiing, are very funny and entertaining so i dunno if you should really get rid or "useless" but good posts

yeah its the most basic problem. Creating more exclusionary cults or deep discussions about e-manners will help some people who really care about the site.
the rest of the word though lol are bastards, bastards are everywhere, we elect them, they make our food, and they feel empowered on the internet. Its where they gain bastard life force through our collective outrage. Blame the parents!
maybe tighter mod controls would help, but thats a difficult on to pull off. We dont want NS to end up like that dead place in the movie Serenity.

-I hate anyone on this site that likes to take their e-pride to the next level by bashing on some new kid. Its like many of the senior or high post count members feel the need to initiate the so called "newbs on NS" who may have a higher intellectual capacity than they do.
-The one thing that pisses my off the most on NS is people running up their post counts. If you look at some of the cults there is no authority and ass kicking going on towards those who like to feel special by having a high post count. I dont want people to think of me bitching at the mods, god bless em they do their job the best they can, but we need more mods (carefully selected that is) so stupid shit doesn't start of an internet E-War.


2)What are 3 suggestions to fix what you hate?
-Come down hard on someone who feels the need to use racial slurs. Nothing gets my angrier than people who like to drop the N-Bomb and actually mean it. I bet 50% of the members on this site don't even understand some of the crap that they say.
-On another site that I visit the odd time called www.pbreiew.com they have a forum specifically dedicated to those who have been kicked off the site. This forum is called the "Hall of Shame," for every member that gets kicked off there is a thread that is marked with the persons screen name and a short description of why they got kicked off in the first post. There is no posting in these threads, its just a reminder to all those shit talkers that what they say does have consequences.

-I love almost everything about newschoolers, I have never spent so much time I one site like I do this one. The way I look at NS is past the bullshitters and those who are just having a bad day and I pick out the posts that have a lighter side to them. NS keeps my informed about everything in the ski world.

-Like Doug mentioned in the first post of the thread it would be really nice to see the news and event coverage page working. I remember when I first got onto this site all the event coverage that a select few of brilliant NS members put together. News like this puts away stupid rumours that always get those opinionated NS members fired up.

5)Give 3 reasonable suggestions for how to stop the hate and shit-talking in the forums.
-My idea is somewhat like the Karma rating except its different as in only moderators as web techs can boost the rating. If there was some sort of way to display black marks that mods put against certain members somewhere around the post count that would help out a lot in the forums. Its sort of like the ebay rating system with the percentage rating beside the persons name.


6)Comment your brains out on everything you need to see changed on the site, so that you never say "NS sucks, I'm leaving" again.
-Like everyone pretty much said above me "I love NS no matter what." No other site has ever impacted my homework or school work more than newschoolers has. The problem with NS doesnt rely on the administration, they do their jobs the best the can, any problems with this site are solely the responsibility of each and ever NS member. Some of us need to step up and show some balls some days, its like people with high post counts have all the authority these days. I like to listen to the new kids on this site, they always bring something fresh to this site because their head hasnt been warped by the what is cool what isnt cool agenda that most members like to drill into their heads. Im not saying I have never been one of those people, I bet 100 bucks a head on NS that at some point anyone with 100+ posts has bitched pointlessly at another member. We as NS'ers need to look past the minority of crap and bullshit that is posted and focus on all the positives that this site has ALWAYS offered.

--I love how its a great site, and even though it has all this hating there is really quality content here. For example news on the front page, one of my favorite updates was the SIA Update with all the new stuff, I thought that was really cool.
--I also love how a person can find out when an event is going to take place, or how a mountains conditions/park is.

The Only thing I see possible to make this site better is to decrease the poop talking to either very little or gone completely.

i think this is a good idea.

i also think the post count is kind of dumb. all of these kids who have 2000 posts after being a member for a week telling everybody who has less posts than them theyre noobs is getting old. I have been on this site for a long ass time, and im still below 500. just because i dont feel the need to post thousands of pointless replys of fuck off or gay does not mean i don't know what im talking about. if anything is displayed, i think the join date should be.

One more thing: There should be an ignore function. Like if you notice a certain member ruins everything for you, just go to their profile, click a button and BAM you cannot see any proof of their existance. Neither in threads, comments, cults, media, messages etc... The only thing you can still see is their profile, in case you want to "un-ignore" them.

yeah ive been here 2 yrs and have 80 some odd posts cause i reply and post if i have some HELPFUL info not your gay or some bullshit and then i get some high school kid whos been here for 3 months and has 1000 posts calling me a noob its bs i say no more post count, if you post time on site you can still tell whos a decent source for info....the vets have all been here like 3 and 4 yrs so you dont need post counts

easy solution, people with udner a certain karma cannot give karma, and it would take a bit to earn karma. even then as your karma is low, you have few points to give out, and as your score increases, so would your karma giving ability.

plus there would be checks and balances to even things out.

that would be a good idea. like a non-mod group taht is voted in. they wouldnt be able to delete threads or anything, but they could change user ratings, and so could the moads. of course these people would have to be nominated by mods or admins, so as to have actual helpful people rather than just popular ones with this job.

another way to control karma is give everyone a certain number of karma points. like start out with twenty, that way you cant just rank a user super bad, or you lose al your points. you could regain points either like once a month, or when someone else gave you a GOOD rating. also, you could lose points when you got a BAD rating.

if someones rating got low enough, they would be suspended, and if they got to many suspensions, they get banned.

also, take away the ability to rate your own picture, or have the picture rating system linked to the member rating/karma system.

moderator type priveleges for Cult creators could be helpful too. just so the mods dont have to clean up ALL the useless posts.

i think people on this site who have NEVER made a reasonably legitimate post about skiing (i.e., lil-gordian/most aliases) should be banned. but maybe dont ban aliases over the summe. i mean honestly-summer wouldnt have been as good as it was without NANTUCKET.

i think stickers would be a super good thing to have to identify members on the mountain. or some way to ID people that use NS, becausse if you have a chance of being recognized in person, you might not be such an e-asshole.

1.I hate being hesitant to post something due to people's harsh flaming. i know im not alone when I say that i feel like this site is being ruined by assholes.

ya like alot of people said..maybe make certain sections where one can go and look up a type of ski and see all the pros and cons of it...make another section for tips on how to do certain tricks, how to grind better, and include detailed pics and info...that would help alot.

The thing I hate about this site are virtually uncontrolable. The only thing I truly hate is the immaturity of a large portion of the members. Immature behavior is something that can only be contained through penalizing people. The methods of penalizing these people will be discussed next.

2) What are 3 suggestions to fix what you hate?

To fix immature behavior, our options are limited. We could provide incentive for all members to contribute positively, but I have a feeling that the immature members aren't really going to give a flying fuck. Actually, I think some of these kids get off on the fact they're hated, hence aliases, etc.

This leaves us with negative reinforcement. I'm all in favor of this, personally, because I do not believe that any type of positive incentive or negotiating with immature members is possible or reasonable. We should:

A. Destroy threads that are worthless. This isn't difficult. We're all skiers, which inherently makes us a unique breed. I have faith in the admins and moderators to evaluate what is funny, intelligent, etc. vs. what is not funny, not intelligent, etc. Someone has to take responsibility for the content of this site and putting up banners that say "stop the hate" is completely insufficient.

B. The following is a rough plan and process for dealing with the problems of NS. A more edited and precise draft can formulated upon request:

Introduction:

Because of the varying nature of the users of NS, different material will be perceived differently by each user. Thus, it is crucial to define incorrect behavior and material in order to maintain a clear and effective approach to dealing with infractions. The definitions defined in the following are to be interpreted by the admins and moderators of NS and it is within their ability and power to act according to their interpretation of these definitions.

SECTION A: Offensive Material Definition version 1.0

Offensive material must meet the following criteria in order to be acted on:

1. Obscene or vulgar material.

2. Racist remarks and/or material.

3. Sexist or sexually offensive remarks and/or material.

4. Inflammatory remarks or material.


SECTION B: Punishment System 1.0

A graded approach to punishment, the NS Punishment System version 1.0 will be based on severity. Punishments for infractions in category a.) will obviously be less severe than infractions that fall into categories b.) and c.).

The following outlines the punishment system for infraction categories 1., 2., and 3.

1. Vulgar or Offensive Material

Infraction #1
Infraction #1 will be met with a warning to the NS member(s) in question. This can and should be coupled with removal of the post, media, etc.

Infraction #2
Infraction #2 will be met with definite removal of material. Admins and moderators now possess the ability to suspend or ban the NS member(s) in question. The NS member(s) in question will be illegible for reinsertion when banned.

Infraction #3
Infraction #3 will be met with definite removal of material and a permanent name and IP ban. NS member(s) in question will have no chance for reinsertion.

2. Racist Remarks and/or Material

Infraction #1
Infraction #1 will be met with removal of offensive material and a suspension of NS membership.

Infraction #2
Infraction #2 will be met with removal of offensive material and permanent name and IP ban of the NS member(s) involved.

3. Sexist or Sexually Offensive Material

Punishments for Category 3 infractions will be the same as Category 2 (see above).

4.) Inflammatory Remarks or Material

Infraction #1
Infraction #1 will be met with removal of material in question and a warning to the NS member(s) involved.

Infraction #2
Infraction #2 will be met with removal of the material in question and the suspension of NS membership for the member(s) involved.

Infraction #3
Infraction #3 will be met with removal of the material in question and another, longer suspension of NS membership for member(s) involved.

Infraction #4
Infraction #4 will be met with removal of the material in question and a IP and name ban, which will be eligible for reinsertion at the discretion of NS admins.


C.) Continue to evolve the NS features, rules, and systems to meet the needs of the NS community.

I love NS. But, I hate it when people post questions and then some 12 year old who thinks he's god's gift to life (and skiing) feels the need to flame that person. It's so immature and stupid. There needs to be more positivity. Also, the "I hate 'insert random pro's name here'" are totally useless. If you've got beef with someone, there are constructive ways of saying it! I don't how NS can fix this other than by stressing how useless it is to everyone on the site.

Well as most the only negative with the site is the users you thrash talk to make themselves feel better and there is already tons of suggestion to address that so I won't repeat.

What I would like to see is NS taken from a Forum/Info site to an organisation. think along the lines of the CSSA (canadian ski and snowboard association) or canadian freestyle ski association but a lot more skier based.

NS could run trouring comps and training camps, maybe create a park training certification to work with some current ski schools, Provide base Rider clubs a certain hill in popular areas, possibly move into a print publication or try and team up with one, create park raiting systems or levels, etc. etc. etc.

Taking it to this level would be tough but and a lot of work to become a recognized organization but I think it would be sick if a cool organization could be created for this segment.

The karma/rating/reputation DOES WORK, it is used on many of the other forums that i frequent, there are 'safegaurds' around it so it cant be abused.

a newbie forum type idea might be a good idea... or a page that you are taken to as soon as you sign up telling you the rules and stuff. and what you can do to make it better.

Let donators have a larger upload limit than regs, to encourage people to donate.

Have membership cards that get discounts at shops around NA (www.trpc.com) does this (paintball site)

More than one stream of NS radio, one for rap and stuff like that and one for rock and stuff.

Video podcasts would be sick.

Add more mods to keep things cleaner.

I have no issues with NS taking some corporate sponsors, you guys need to eat. I see no prob with taking on alchol companies or anything like that.

Warn people before they are blocked and block people more readily.

NS CLOTHING, i cant say that enough, its a HUGE moneymaker and would sell like mad, as well selling the shirts to some more "core" stores would be sick.

The review section needs to get up and be heavily moderated, but will help the site grow immensly.

Trick secion needs to come back and also be heavily moderated, but will further help the site grow.

The ads in the mags although interesting are not very descriptive of what it is, make them more descriptive so that more people will come on and sign up etc.

NS stickers need to come back and have the website on them, its easy advertising for people to stick up on their chairlifts.

Have pics and vids searchable by location.

I know, it sounds rediculous, but heres my thoughts. I want to get rid of the post count. I know that atleast 50% of this site posts on forums because they want to get their post count up. Stupid posts like wow, and no... Wow theres some thought not! The post count shows people who has just joined NS, according to members. I know people who have been on this site since 2003 and maybe have a about 5 posts. I also know people who have been on NS for a month and have almost 1000 posts...Just because they dont have many posts doesn't meen they haven't been on Newschoolers for a lengthy period. To build on that, who cares how long they have been a part of NS. So what they are new, they can learn more things. This post count just ruins the whole part of Forums and what your susposed to do with them. Ski Gabber is for skiing stuff and non is for everything else. WHO CARES ABOUT YOUR POST COUNT. Please stop post whoring and hating the "new" or little post count people. We are a community, we need no hate. Sorry for not answering all your wishes bishop... will get to that when i have time

It almost promotes more of a post-whoreish attitude because the people that get noticed more (good or bad) will get rated more often.
then you get joe i-hate-such-and-such-a-trick posting threads all the time or replying all the time. Or mr. I hate/love George bush posting just to get karma making it just a game.

the idea of having or limiting new members from making new threads is a great idea.. that stops people from just making fake accounts to stir shit... which happens a lot (winter.steve ??)having new accounts based on email account validation is another hurdle.
Mods having the ability to lock the forums is a great idea too - this stops 20 threads about the xgames in 5 minutes.

IP bans only work in certain situations cause there's a lot of dorms and schools where a lot of people share one IP address and internally are on their own network.

the best thing about ns right now are the regional forums. there is none of the hating bullshit that floods these forums. im not saying i havent hated in the ski gabber, i most definitely has and so has 99 percent of the people on this site, but in the regional forums everybody knows everybody by name, and you ride with them all of the time. thats my favorite thing going on ns right now.

another thing that i actually do like about ns is the "tanner sucks" threads and all of that. its fun to have some controversy on this site and see what other people feel about the people you either idolize or cannot stand. i just think that the threads would be a lot better if they had kids not disrespecting the athletes, but instead giving educated posts or whatnot about why they feel the way they feel. thats what i really like about those threads. basically anything controversial isnt a bad thing, its a good thing to talk about.

one thing i dislike about ns is sketchline...ahaha im just kidding, im over that shit now. but i think that getting rid of the post count could be a very good thing. not to take away anything that have the 15k+ posts because that takes some skill man, but it would stop a lot of hate that floods the forums

couple things i miss about ns from back in the day, on the front page when it showed everybodys name when it was their birthday, man that was awesome.

i think the one thing that would make this site a ton better is the video trick tips like skiing motion used to have. doug im sure you could get a few quality names to show a couple of stock tricks, corks and some inverts, and give a good explanation to go along with the video. the trick tips that i just realize arent there anymore were not working what so ever. i think that the video tips would be a major improvement to this site and give the people just getting into the sport a lot of learning experience.

There are two things off the top of my head that annoy me:

1. So many threads about the same thing. How many ski college threads are there? Look around before you post something.

2. Ski Gabber is filled with posts that should be in the regional forums. I really don't care about a rail jam in wisconsin, because I live in tahoe. If I wanted to know about the midwest I'd go to that regional forum.

i say that you should have a bunch of "lower level" mods who just patrol a certain area

since my computer is always messed up i cant usually play the videos in here which sucks, and its a pain in the ass to have to click like 2 links just to play a video and then wait for it to load, so i think that you should put like a standard movie player on ns like quicktime and you dont have to click so many links to find it,

the great thing about NS is that you can come on here and say what ever, ask whatever, and type whatever. Now on that note its tough for people asking real question about tricks, or jumps or skis to get a serious answer. Why? because everyone thinks they're cooler than they really are or are better than they are, or know something that no body else knows. And if any of those things are true, then post that which is meaningful and helpful to our new society here.

the problem is the NS mentality. we think we're better than everyone else whether we are or not. because of that kids will say and act in this new mannor because its just our generation. look at some of our pros, they bring about such a thing. Tanner Hall gets picked up for weed. not to single him out thats just the most recent of recent. Plus everyone on here knows some guy in the lime light, and whether that guy has treated him with respect for his skill level is very important. If one of the Olenicks made fun of you, your going to post a thread about how he "sucks." Right away that is just a shit talking thread waiting to happen, where whoever about whatever (concerning him) can go on a rant.

so how do we fix this. I've only been a member since jan 2 or so and already after reading your post, i'd say get more "spam" blockers if you will in the "ski gabber" section of NS. that seems to be where most of this crap goes down. Get your team to read that stuff and take it out of that particular gabber. My feeling is the ski gabber is all about SKIING, not the petty shit that people want to talk about, thats for "site discussion" or "non ski gabber." thats where id begin. tighten up the Ski page thats dedicated to actual skiing progression. If that whole section becomes strickly about skiing, then you'll stop getting stupid post about "hes gay" or "search bar it fag" or "noob". beacuse anyone who selects to go into that forum will know, becuase you'll have edited the ones that shouldn't be there, that this forum is strickly for progression and people that wanna help not hate.

you might even go so far as to get a shit talking forum for those who want to bag on poeple together and stick up for their homies. that way when you click on that particular forum you know what your getting into. And then people like Jacob and Spriggs and others who feel NS is going down hill wont have to see it and be around it unless they click into it.

Also i think you should start a ask the pros forum. where only pros and notable ams are allowed to post: essentially its a wide open cult where all those skilled enough to answer legitimate questions can and hopefully will. I know id like it a lot more if i could straight up ask a pro, "hey when im doin a cork 7 blah blah blah." then you know your answers legit.

what do i love about NS, it is in its heart revolutionary. Just people like myself found out way too late to hit up the good years of it. But i like being able to post stupid threads )in the right section of course) about curling and longboarding and all the things i want to. I also like the contest, i think you guys should give away more free shit if you can! if people are anything like me, they;re not sponsored and would love to see a pro, who maybe can throw some stuff their way on a continual basis. But it has to be strickly NS thats what makes you feel like you stand a chance. OR have a BC contest with some of your fav pros. Win this contest and you can spend two days with so and so in Grizzly Gultch or something like that would be awesome.

i hope you guys fix what ever it is that you can, needs fixing, and anything else cuz since ive been a member, i cant stop looking on here. i do it so often i cant get any sleep now.
