Bode Miller: Skiing Drunk 'Not Easy'
1 hour, 30 minutes ago
NEW YORK - Bode Miller knows he puts his life at risk when he skis drunk, but the outspoken Olympic favorite admits he may try the dangerous activity again.
"Talk about a hard challenge right there. ... If you ever tried to ski when you're wasted, it's not easy," Miller told "60 Minutes" for a segment that will air Sunday. "Try and ski a slalom when ... you hit a gate less than every one second, so it's risky. You're putting your life at risk. ... It's like driving drunk, only there are no rules about it in ski racing."
Asked if the risk meant he would never ski drunk again, Miller replied "No, I'm not saying that."
In the interview, the 28-year-old Miller acknowledged that his partying has affected his performance in the past.
"There have been times when I've been in really tough shape at the top of the course," he said.
Miller, the defending World Cup overall champion and a two-time silver medalist at the Salt Lake City Olympics, was also blase about the possibility of winning gold in Turin.
"Whether somebody wants me to get five gold medals or whatever it is, I sort of feel like they are all other people's concerns and issues, not really mine. ... I don't really care what everybody else says," he said.
Miller has drawn attention — and criticism — for his outspokenness before. He has called drug rules in skiing that he deems too strict "a joke" and was fined last month for refusing to take a boot test after a World Cup slalom race.

I have said it before, Im not a fan of Miller.. It must be pretty frustrating for his sponsors, who pay him huge salaries, to see his performances affected by his partying

My guess is it involves the heel/toe pieces of the boot. You can replace them with bigger ones, and i've seen it done in amateur racing before, but it was banned then too.

I think a boot test just measures the amount of space between you foot and the bottom of you boot. Just like you can only have a certain height for your plates or risers.

to all of you people that say tanner is bad, rethink it. tanner doesn't really go on national television talking about getting shit faced and skiing or drugs. no, not really.

i grew up racing and it is tottaly common knowledge throughout the racing community that bode used to use cover up shit to pass drug tests. i think all the negative stereotypes about racers can be atributed to the new generation of racer kids. when i was racing there was this older kid i skied with who showed up to a downhill one time at like 10:30 just in time for his run didnt inspect the course parked his car in 15 min parking and won the race drove back to the hotel and started drinking again. there used to be a lot of really sick racers. its just lame now for the younger kids

To whoever said bode is probably pissing off his sponsors you are a moron. The guy wins more races that matter and gets more press for the shit he does than anyone else in the business.
Im sure if it were calculated Miller probably is the single largest contributor to a sponsor of any sponsored skiier in any discipline.

no no i heard like after you finish a race they have to actually like look at your boots. and bode I believe crashed in a race and dind't finish and so he thought it was pointless for him to get a boot check and so they fined him

the boot test i think is to make sure your boot isn't too high up on your ski cause they have some limit or something cause it makes turning a lot easier i believe

Yeah thats right I used to race. we had wicked parties too. but any way.
The higher you are off the ski the more on edge you can go. think about it. if your boot is closer to the snow and you put it on edge you will have a shorter range of motion before your boot hits the snow. So the higher you are the more of an angle you can get/the farther over you can put your ski= a better turn rate. The faster you can turn the straigter you can go thus getting a fster time.
The boot rule came as a result of an old rule. the first rule was that you wher only alwoed to have your risers set at a certain hieght to prevent extra turning. so to get around that people put big heel and toe pieces on thier boot.

There is a clear difference with have a couple beers at lunch, and getting drunk at lunch and then going skiing.
The fact he said skiing drunk is like driving drunk, and i'll do it again, is probably the most irresponbile thing you could say.
So Really he likes driving drunk to, and has no problem with that, that what that statement comes across as.
If you want to act like that while your skiing or driving being totally shitfaced, it gonna come back to get you. And hopefully not someone else too.
And being an icon in a sport, does give you extra responesbility's wither if you want them or not, to conduct yourself like a professional. All he had to say is Ya enjoy a couple beers at lunch now and then, and sometimes socializing with my freinds during the circut hurts me whn im at the top of that gate.
There ya go.

In the recent past I've been gaining a little more respect for a few races. Bode and Rhalves.
I read an article on Rhalves skiing big mountain shit with the Reb Bull guys and gor the most part killin it.
More importantly, Bode has actually been kind of cool lately in my eyes. Not saying him being this irresponsible and shit is cool, but he dosen't have that racing attitude you see a lot of other people have. Plus hes got his own race style that isnt supposed to be good and he still kicks ass...
But it's still racing.

I think your infering something he covered his ass on with the : "there are no laws against it in skiing". That is as far as saying bode drives around drunk. Also what you said about coming back to get you and hopefully not someone else, its a moot point in this case since hes not doing skier cross and is prodominately skiing by himself, with only himself to hurt.
Flatout its his choice as to wether he drinks or not. He seems to be pretty good drunk if you haven't noticed. He conducts himself as a professional with the times he gets when he races, and shouldn't(and isn't) be required to do anything more.
Call him a douchebag all you want but the guy continues to win, and continues to bring money into his segment of the sport. Until he stops doing that i think that people should let him swim in Jager.

Id also like to add that the reason most people hate on racing is because it ends up being more about the massively controled and repetiative sport. What Bode is doing is racing for himself and doing what he wants to do with it. He is making racing as free as he possibly can and i think its really making strides as to how the public is percieving the control over the races and its athletes.
