Binding Answering time (with a little complaint :)

No offense, but probably many will take it... how the crap can 2/3 the kids on this site have no idea about bindings? "what kind of bindings should go on AR5s?" I mean crap, the same bindings work on every frickin ski. There are like 5 or 6 different bindings that work just fine for free ride that are solid with a high din. So here you go:

If you are lightweight and don't need a high din, Salomon s810 if you want a lightweight binding, lookp10, Rossi scratch, axial, power 100s if you want a slightly tougher but heavier binding.

If you are medium/average weight or do normal riding (hard pack, park, with occasional pow) then get something with a din of 12 or so to be sure. Salomon s912 Ti if you want a lightweight set up, Look p12, Rossi scratch, power, axial, or FKS 120 if you want a tougher, heavier binding.

If you are a big skier, or what a burly binding you will want a tougher, high din bindings. Recommendations include Salomon s914 (yes, they are actually metal and tougher), Look p14, Rossi Scratch, Axial, or Power 140, FKS 155.

Unbreakable bindings for those who are rough on their skis and/or weigh a lot: Look p18, Salomon s916 or s920, Rossi FKS 155 or 185.

I am not really recommending Line or 4FRNT bindings because they have yet to prove themselves. Not saying they aren't great, just dont a lot about them. weeeeee

I only ski on the Comp 1400 free from Marker. I'm 6'3 and 225lbs.

Not a park guy but a huge pow and tree skier. Bindings work great!

All new bindings are crap!

Marker - Sh*t
New Salomon shape - Sh*t
Look/Rossignol - Sh*t
Line - Absolutely Sh*t
Oh forgot, Atomic - Sh*t

Best bindings are any factory race bindings, preferably salomon as they're the most adjustable. Well worth hunting out! Or some fresh out of the packet Salomon shop bindings from around '97,'98 when companies actually cared how good they made stuff!

so when i ordered my s912's they came with risers and so today i got them mounted on my moships and they mounted them with the risers and i dont know if i should have told them not to or if it will be a good thing. im mostly goin to use them for bc booters and trees etc. So will the risers make much of a difference. should i get them removed or should i just leave them?

no. he actually is pretty much right.

I disagree that normal Looks are shit, but....

Nothing touches race stocks. Much better bindings than normal ones. You can find them pretty easily and they are worth the extra money.

s916 is awesome. P18 is dope too. Only problem is P18 can't be adjusted size wise at all. I have both s916 and P18 and love them both. Plus I wont have to buy new bindings for like 10 years.

i have 912's and the heal track is aluminum, besides the paint scrapping off them they have been perfectly fine for me, no prereleases or anythign

the heel tray on s912Ti's is titanium, not aluminum. if the toe peice is set correctly and they were mounted by a competent tech, they work perfectly fine. also, like several people said, they release very accurately.
marker bindings blow up if you land backseat. i've seen it happen plenty of times. with other bindings, the toe can release vertically. with markers, it cant until your boot kicks out to the side. hopefully the binding breaks before your knee is torn apart. also, they have next to no elastic travel, which, like someone said above, means you are either in or out, there is no in between. elastic travel will give you that split second to regain your balance, but on a marker, you dont have that.
the mojo 15 binding is the same design as the td8, which is a much more solid binding than the current ld12. its a little heavier, but the construction is much sturdier, and the mojo has a din of 15 too. they dont have a turntable heel, but the heel can kick out to the sides a bit to reduce knee strain.
atomic bindings should just be out of the question. every pair i've seen get a binding check this year has failed, miserably. the forward pressure sucks, and the mounting length is really long.

I have salomon 810 ti's on all my sticks...never had any problems at all plus if u do some searchin u can get em for 100 on ebay I have bought 3 pairs on ebay for 100. They are the 05 all black an red model. Highly recomended for the avid parker who wants some cheap decent binding.

I hope this hasn't come up yet.

I have the new not turnable rossis, and had some problems.

Turns out that you should really look at the tension when your boot is in the binding, this can be done with a meter, which is at the back of the binding.

The old ones could compensate the lack of pressure, but the new ones are a lot more sensitive to that.

So be careful when tuning your bindings.

^^tuning your bindings are you stupid, get them set properly when you buy them from your local shop. i used to race and figured i knew it all about bindings but when i started at a shop i soon realised i knew shit. For jumping/rails the rossi turntable(not this years new shit binding) is the best, never had or seen any problems. For the rest of the mountain use whatever no binding is perfect.

Marker bindings are the reason I tore my MCL last season. Granted they were an older pair, maybe 2001 or so M series I think, not sure I got them on a used pair of 1080s. I had them tested, remounted, set "correctly for my body weight, skill" whatever. I could kick them off in mid air. I crank the dins to max, could kick them off whenever I wanted still, increased forward pressure of the binding. Landed a 3 at stratton early season, all of a sudden the ski wasnt there, soft snow, fall was right leg going one way, left leg goen another. I threw those bindings away and threw my broken ftx-120s on the skis, healed myself and rode more.
Maybe they've changed but when i got the opinion from two shops that they released to spec in every test then that tells me we put the bindings through a different sort of strain and they can't handle it...

Don't call people stupid, it shows how smart you really are.

I was talking about people who for whatever reason have had to reajust(?) their bindings. It happends, and not everybody goes to a shop for that. Just for those people I commented that these bindings really need the bootpressure, not like the turnables. Those could be a cm to big, and there was no problem.

Maybe this is the reason some dont like the bindings.

I hope this reply was up to par with your intelligence, and not worth a dumbass reply.

4FRNT Binding are proven. It's really a VIST binding. It's more or less a Salomon Heel copy or not I'm not sure. and the Toe works really well. They have been used on the world cup for a long time.

Using the same holes again isn't exactly a great idea(and not something I'd recommend a customer do, but hey, if they insist...they can sign off on it...), but can be done so long as you use a binding with the same hole pattern, IE a salomon binding. If you use a look/rossi binding, they'll have to fill the old holes and drill new ones for the look binding, as it has a completely different hole pattern. You probably won't be at true center anymore.

what do you guys think about marker 14.0 freeze comp bindings? featured in freeskier last month as sarah burkes binding of choice...if riding those makes me a girl i would not mind being sarah burke

yeah, watch out wit the SolTi bindings. I'm a light rider but I cased a couple landings and busted the heeltrack in half. The 914's are bomber though

im sure its been answered but i didnt feel like reading everyone elses.... i broke 3 bindings tonight both on my skis and one on my brothers... mine being markers(garbage) his being looks.. and yea breaking three binding in the smae night doing 540's is prolly pissing me the hell off so i want a binding for park.. big jumps spins rails etc. and i want these bindings not to break bend die snap explode.... any suggestions on bindings that could make this shitty night better?

alrite so i got a shitty pair of axiums yes i know...but they came with the skis so i couldnt do much aobut it i was just wonderin how you tune the DIN setting on them because it can be done in front and in back i was just wondering if there was a difference??? and also i was wondering if you tune the DIN with the boot in the binding or out of the binding??? sorry its a stupid question but i had to ask it

you've gotta either be a huge ass person to use a din of 12 or higher or you'd better be moving about mach 5 when you eat it. I'm close to 170lbs and I am set at 8 for my din. I also rock p10's. There are more things that go into what type of binding you get and what din range you are looking for. there's weight, type of skier (level of skier), sole length and height. People may say that height doesn't matter but if you know your physics you'd know better. The taller you are, the more leverage you'll put on your bindings. Thus a slightly higher din setting may be appropriate. Also, if you have really bad knees you'll want the din set at a slightly lower range so you don't destroy yourself.

im 6"2 165 ride mostly park size 13.5 boot idk what that is like 31 or something... what binding do you recommend ... are the 06 rossi axials the one with no turntable and the one you dont recommend?? i want a binding that wont break:(

I'd like to make a suggestion for you but it's more your decision than mine. The turntable bindings help keep your knees safe but I don't know how much more durability you get out of them. I have p10's and haven't had any problem with them, but I also got them for 50 bucks new, so I can't complain. The line bindnings are nice, heavy, but nice. My suggestion is the p12 ti or axial 140 if you're looking for turntable bindings. I'm not a big fan of marker, I see them come in blown apart too often at my work. I haven't heard much about the new rossi's or look px series so I can't help you on that. sorry.

Any one who does not understand how bindings work, sould not be skiing. I see dum fucks come in to the local shop and ask for a high din. What dum fucks! I hope they break a leg. on another note marker bindings are the best binding in the market. salomon are strait shit along with Rossi/look, what a fuckin joke! so figure it out!

Easy on the hostility buddy, no one said anything terrible about your marker bindings, I'd say they're more suited for racing, but nothing bad, and look/rossi bindings have more than proved themselves via pros near and far. Salomon bindings aren't so bad either. They've been making quality bindings for years now. What's with all the talk about dumb fucks too, I believe anyone who can't spell dumb has nothing to say on the matter.

owned like a bitch. but its true, people should look for a binding that works for them, not one with a high DIN 'cause thats what the pros ride. and i think that all bindings are good in their own way. but looks are the best. but salomon and marker arent bad at all.

I have a quick question regarding brake width, hopefully someone can help me out. How much wider than your skis can you safely go with the brake lever? For example, my new skis are 85mm underfoot, but the shop doesn't have the s912 B90s, only B95s. Is that a problem?

Just make sure that your brakes aren't insanely wider than your ski's width. At some point, your brakes can drag when you carve a turn. Doesn't happen too often, but it can when you match up narrow carve skis with binding brakes designed for ski widths of 100mm.

I hear Atomics are coming with Salomon bindings (they're changing the mounting patterns on their skis) next year which is good news cause Atomic bindings are weak and always have been, back to the ess-v.a.r. days. I still rock my 7 year old S900's, Salomons are the way to go for big mountain...

I would not recommend buying the line reactor bindings at all. At the beggining of the season i bought a pair of reactor 12s and they busted within a week of not too rough riding. When i had the shop send them back, they told me theyd have to mount a different brand of bindings on my skis because line is not shipping the reactors out anymore because of the monumental problems theyve been having with them. The shop i bought them from said 3 out of the 5 pairs of reactors they sold busted and had to be sent back. Keep in mind this was maybe 3-4 weeks after the first snow and i only had my reactors for a week. Maybe next years reactors will be better, i dont really know i just wanted to give people a heads up.
