man, this is such a step up from my last bike (1999 Trek 4500). now I can try more shit withought worrying about braking it as much.. I got a good deal too, $800 (normally $1200) because it had been sitting in this shop all season and they marked it down. my old bike had toe straps so I never learned how to bunny hop properly and I was learning today and fucked the shit out of my shins because every once in a while I would slip off the pedals on the way down. any good way to lear how to do bunny hops decently, and more importantly, any good way for me to brake my bad habit of bulling up all at once because of the toe straps?

its best to learn by pulling up the whole bike at once, at least easy. you have to grip your pedal by putting your foot at a ninety degree angle, so it is pointing at the ground. Try just pulling your back tire off the ground by simultaneously putting your feet at 90 degree angles and pulling up. once you can lift your back tire you will be able to learn real bunnyhops and j-hops.

whats the diff between j-hops and bunny hops?
and ya, i can get the back end up (not every time yet...) but I was told that 90* is too much and not nessisary. i mean, that is what I had thought and that was the majority of the times that I slipped off and gouged up the front of my shins (those pedals have the little spikes in them)
I decided, that I would rather have a hard tail with nice components and so on, then a full suspension, not to mention, Im more used to a hard tail, and they are probably better for what I want to do anyway.

The bikes ok, you did buy it at a good price though, Rocky Mountains are soo overpriced for what they are worth.

to keep your feet from slipping off the pedals try this: a bunny hop has two parts 1) you pulling the front of the bike up with your arms 2) you kicking the back of the bike up using your feet pushed up against the pedals. too improve your footwork just try the 2nd stage, and keep the front tire on the ground while you work the back tire left and right up and down

yeah i used to not be able to bunnyhop my bike, but when my brother showed me that you need to think of it like an olley on a skateboard. Pop the front up and then instead of sliding your foot up to lif the board, just jump with the whole bike andsuck ur feet up. Kind ahard to explain. but i went from where you are to being able to bunny hop 2 cynderblocks layed side by side in like a week

i am pretty sure a j-hop is a wheelie and then you lift the back wheel up where a bunny hop is the whole bike up at one time. not 100% sure though.

I think I got likealmost a foot today on a regular basis and I gapped about a foot too. and im definatly not sliding off nearly as much now that I got shin guards (I hate how that works!!!)

you sure they are expensive? I was looking at a Kona and a Marin and both were $1200 also. all three had similar forks and similar components.

The composition and the geometry of the frame differs with the name. Go for Kona, Marin frames break.

Yeah, someone else said it but get your back tire in the air by pointing your toes towards the ground and pulling up with your calves. once you can do that 5 or 6 inches, combine it with your wheelie pull up. DONT pull up with your arms...its about leaning back and pulling at the same time, and then once you are the highest point of the wheely, pull up with your calves like before. It takes a while but it will all come together.
of course, this is all on a bmx bike...i bet its a lot harder on a mountain bike that has suspension and a bigger frame.

i had toe straps on my bike and when i put platform pedals on my bike i taught myself how to do normal bunny hops. i went through the same process and it took me a hella of a lot longer.it helped that i was like 10 or 11 though so i could keep at it all day. they key is to just be persitant and ull get it...it already sounds like u have and as u do it more often it will come more naturally and it wont feel awkarwd like it does in the beginning.

Dude - Flow is the way to go. I've had the f3.0 for like 5 months now and it's a thing of beauty. It can help to thing of a bunny hop as just an ollie (or j hop watever) that takes off from both wheels instead of just the back.

ok, i think i just need to prectice bunny hopping more to get better at it now. one thing that was suggested to my by my friend was to at the peak pull up my knees to get more air. I have only really tried it once and my landing was very sketchey.
how about drops? do I just need to pull hard back? I tryed a little 2.5 footer today off a planter box into the grass and did a nice little faceplant because I thought I pulled back enough, but..apparently I didnt. I cant hold a wheelie for too long so that could be part of the problem. could I just lean back over my seet and get back over my back wheel? do you think I would hit my tailbone if i did when I land? also, the top of the planter box was small, and I didnt get much speed and I know that speed helps too...

the best thing to do is to learn how to weelie (not necessarily well, but just a few pedals worth or the point where you can get your front wheel off the ground. Then practice pulling the front wheel up without petalling (a manual). Once you've got that, practice popping just the rear tire of the ground (doesn't have to be more than a few inches). The best way to practice this is to find a curb and practice pullling your front wheel over the curb then pulling your rear tire over it too. Once you get that down, try combining them (front first, then back wheel) and experiment with different ways of doing it from there since everyone has a different style. Hope all this typing helps you.

thank you...
I do plenty of trails. I wanted a sturdy bike (im a bigger guy) that I could learn how to do other shit on while still be able to ride single-tracks.

I dunno dude, for drops just pull back...just like the start of a bunny hop, the most important aspect is to get your weight back by leaning back as you pull up. If you dont do that, A. you wont pull up more than a couple inches and B. you will eat ground like you did. Lean back!
Just keep practicing, you will get the hang of it. Then you can start bunny hoping off the drops too, which is good times. Oh, and your friend is either retarded or doesnt know how to explain stuff...dont lift with your kness, lift with your calves...its like pushing back with your toes pointed down. Your knees will naturally pull in when they need to.

for drops the key is weight back, you dont even necissarily have to pull up all taht much as long as your not landing flat. if your landing flat off a big enough drop try a trials landing(bike is basically vertical in the air, back wheel hits, let the front down.)
hopping is a little trickier, and defineatly go with the jhop, its safer, more natural once your used to it and you can get a hell of a lot higher. shift your weight back behind your seat with your arms almost straight, and let that pull the front end up to 45 degrees. then pull your arms in to your chest and move your weight to the center again. the hard part comes next- lift your heels (still on your pedals of course) to your butt, and push the handles away from you, leveling the bike in the air. you can jump as high as you can get your front wheel this way. good luck

k, I got the drop I was trying. only thing is, a few times I tryed Iwent too far back over my seat and was still like that for the landing. I got it is the balls once, and almost got it really bad again, but cought the sear inbetween my legs. does my seat need to be up higher (i would doubt..)?

i have the same problem as you when i dirt jump.. i wouldnt raise the seat or you will lose your control and not be able to bunny hop/j hop as high.. i cant imagine hitting any jumps with a high seat, you'd lose all your control

u need to go two step hops...pull up front, then pop back...practice doing it at high speeds first

for drops? i thought all I needed was the front to hit at the same time or after the back. I was told that once I got better at that, I could start hopping
off dropps.
