The recording industry is obsolete

Recording should not be an industry, and i prefer not to support it. most of the money you spend does not go to the artist. I don't care to give money to anyone but the artist. the recording industry is obsolete. Artists can (and I can think of a fair amount who do) record and create their own albums, and even have decent success distributing them, themselves. With the money I save NOT buying cds, I spend on going to shows. the artists make much more money from me this way, because they make much more money putting on shows. at these shows, I will buy cds directly from the artist, and because they don't have to pay someone to market it, usually the cds I buy in this fashion are around $7. in-fact, the artists make more money from me wince I download their songs for free, then if I hadn't, because if I had not, I would not know about far more then half of the artists I know and love, and thus would not go to shows, and potentially buy cds and t-shirts from.

without recording studio's there would be no records and without people coming out with new albums music wouldnt get to far would it?!, but still its to bad that alot of record labels will sell out at any chance. it seems like all the record labels that keep it real end up going down, its sad, look at moon ska records they kept it real then mainstream music said, "hey ska cant be that cool" and down they went. sad days

Without the music industry I would have no job I make my money recording albums and mixing shows for bands If they had no cds to sell at shows lots of bands would not be able to tour to play live shows, so with out the recorded material for product the live show cannot survive, don't talk abnout shit you don't know If there was no business like this I would not have a job and would'nt be able to ski, so you are fucking me out of my ability to ski...but whats funny is I have downloaded music before, so I am somewhat hypocritical but most of that music I have gon out and purchased the album later. all in all you are another un-informed fuck wad that is fucking with my skiing...dammnit

no, i know the difference between distribution and actual recording of the songs. but many artists, with technology in mind, can easly use their own equiptment and pay for a room with the proper acustics (or if they have one...) and record their cds themselves.

one band comes to mind, and that is Lethal Rejection. they are a hXc punk band from seattle. check out their site http://www.lethalrejectionseattle.com/

they even do all their own distributing themselves through snail mail.

No. To get as good a recording as possible you need good equipment and highly trained engineers and producers. If what you're saying is true then every band would record albums themselves, save a whole load of cash and just get a label to distribute it. Recording well is NOT easy or cheap.

listen to a lethal rejection song. personally, the recording quality is just fine with me. it may not be as high quality as bitchney spears, but it captures the music I know and love. thats all that matters. well, atleast for punk and ska. and really, it isnt all that bad... If I dont have higher demands, call me a commie, but I really dont see why I should pay for them.

Theres more to it than just ticket sales though. Plus those tickets are mad cheap. U gotta take into account all the cd's and merchandise they sell, and just the fact that they're getting the publicity.

you have absolutely no ability to even sound remotely correct with what your saying, you really look like an ass. way to go another ignorant person talking about something they know nothing about and do it with such arrogance they believe that they are correct. I agree that yes your band's record may sound good, but if you knew something about music you would relize that yes with punk and ska their entire sound is based off of very little tech and or studio magic as far as production/recording goes. Othe music that may use studio magic does not mean covering up for ability either. in short you should stop talking about this, there is nothing to base your ideas off of. way to go.

the music I like consists of punk, ska, underground hip-hop, trip-hop and a little techno. all, make for easy DIY recording. punk and ska have already been explained why it is easy ^^. Hip hop, you only have 2 channels (assuming one rapper and a turntable, although it can of course get a bit more complicated, but you don't need fancy mics to pick up instruments) so that really isn't that hard to DIY. Techno is mostly don't on the computer/electric keyboard in the first place so that is very easy DIY and Trip-hop is a mix of hip-hop and techno.

so, I suppose it is the music I listen to that makes me have such an opinion.

seriously you should shut up before you really let evryone how much shit you don't know. honestly, two channels? you think any major album that keep turntables as a mono signal you should be throat punched, onyl old school old punk and some garage bands reocrd without fancy production tricks. just stop your ideas are ridiculous, even though we all have the right to say what we want to, you should just stop to protect us fromyour stupidty rubbing off on anyone.

ok, fuck what I said about tracks. its still not that hard to DIY recording. my firend has pro logic and he makes perfectly fine recordings that sound professional on his computer buy himself all the time.

Big giant recording studios are not that necessary. Most avg. computers can be turned into a decent studio as long as you have a basic mixer, high quality mics, and the software that goes along with it.

Mike Oldfield who did not have the most advanced equipment created "tubular bells" in the 1970's all by himself, a prog. rock classic.

That being said, most people do not understand a) how to record properly and b) how to mix properly.

But your argument is not really about that.

The industry is and will always be necessary in order to promote and distribute a sucessful band. It is damn hard to make it out there on your own, and that's why there are probably thousands of amazing unknown bands are out waiting to be discovered. It's not because they can't record properly or have shitty music, it's because they can't get their name out.

As far as hip hop..

A solid hip hop track can be looking at 15+ different layers/channels of sound.

Between all the different percussion, bass, bass drum, kicks, claps, guitar, strings, piano, pads/keyboard, etc. It adds up quick.

You can make a pretty solid song without having a full studio, but the majority of people out there producing these tight tracks from their home/basement are simply mixing samples that have ALREADY been recorded in a studio.

Pretty much the whole 'original pirate material' album that the streets put out was instrumentals/beats that they bought from a production company that mass sold it for $1 each. The instruments sound clean on his album because it was originally recorded in a studio and he just mixed it.

I've been trying to move away from that and alot of my newer songs use original live instruments. But trying to make live instrument recordings sound clean is a task in it's own. If you want to do it right you really need nice studio equipment which would cost you $20,000 - $50,000 easily.

Unless you have top of the line equipment and know how to use it all, you are going to notice a big difference.

Some of my favorite albums are home recorded albums. Iron and Wine's "The Creek Drank the Cradle" is an amazing album, but based strictly on the feel of it. The production is shit, but it works cause it's a bearded man sitting in his room whispering into a 4-track. I appreciate that. I love music like that. I've been doing it for years myself but to think that bands like Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, The Shins, hmmm, the Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow, Avril Lavigne, etc, etc. would transfer good to a 4-track machine is being naive. There are records that need big production to make them what they are.... so that you can turn them up loud in your car, hear every note, etc. etc....

Don't get me wrong I'm all for home recording. I've just recently started shooting hi quality stereo with video for my friends band and its verrrry exciting. Just got a brand new AKG Acoustics mic and its very delicious.

I just started getting into recording and it's damn fun.

You can make quite professional sounding quality songs with a mix of adobe audition and fruity loops with some decent .vst plugins.
