Replying to Wireless Router Help

here's the deal-- i just got a new wireless router, read all the shit the manual had to say and attempted to connect it to my base computer via ethernet cord. One cord goes from my modem to the WAN port on the router, and the other cord goes from port 1 to my computer. The computer gets the signal fine when it goes straight from the modem to the computer, but when i put it through the router the signal somehow stops. Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks a lot
