Ok first. i don't believe in God. However, i really think people should live by what they believe, and it dont bother me. Jewish, Christian, Catholic, Santanist whatever, as long as you really believe that and your happy. Well, today i went over to my friends house to work on a project. His dad is a Revern (spelling?) and they're all real religious. thats fine. good for them. Well, they invited me to this party thing for pizza and im like ok that sounds good. So we go, and im expecting some development neighborhood party or something, and what is it. A Church youth Group Meetiing! No one told me anything about that. I mean i found that to be really rude. I wouldn't just go up and start talking bout why i beleive God doesn't exsist and why i don't like organized religions. Why? because it would be really disrespectful to them to be saying all thse things completly opposite of what they beleive. That just really upsets me that people can be so ignorant that they think everyone thinks the same things they do.

i totally hate that. i am an atheist. i told my friend i didnt want to go to youthgroup with him , because it makes me extremely uncomfortable and i hate any kind of organized religion. and he keeps asking me every week, i keep telling him no, then he puts all these guilt trips on me and shit. i hate that with a passion. i just wish people would be respectful of what i beleive and not try to force their crap on me.

I too find that extremely annoying. Maybe it's because I'm Indian, but people like to follow me around town and preach to me. It should be legal to push those people over the falls (the one I remember most was in Niagra). I'd probably put up with that for free pizza though, then again, I'd probably let you hit me upside the head with a baseball bat for free pizza!

i don't want to sound really religious, cause i'm not, but why don't you belive in god? it's alright not to believe in god actually, but there has to be some kind of a 'higher' being. how else can you explain everything that's here. and don't even say the big bang, cause even if that's true, how did that little molecule/universe get here?

how can you believe in God whens theirs no proof at all that he exists? I mean some people base their whole way of life on some book that was written ages ago, people believed in all sorts of shit then, witches, dragons, etc. Wake up, its the year 2k2, I see no point in religion whatsoever, go to church and pray to something you dont even know is real, then live your life the way someone else says for you to just so you wont go to hell after you die. Sounds a bit ridiculous to me. Sorry for the rant, but fuck religion.

actually there's more scientific and archeological proof that Jesus existed than there is for Alexandra the great or Socrities. People are just incredibly resentful of anything that might prove the bible true. So once again, before you spout your mouth off, get your facts straight, foo.

what lol oh gosh, people who say science can't explain it definitely don't read enough. Ok the big bang has nothing to do w/ how everything got here, it's talking about how our present universe started to take shape from hot gas and subatomic matter. Now the question arises on how something arises from complete nothingness. Well folks there is empirical evidence to support this happening. In empty vacuums where there literally is no matter, strange phenomena known as vacuum fluctuations exist, where a particle can just spring into existence. Over billions upon billions upon billions of years one of these particles was probably able to sustain and then the amount of particles or matter just built geometrically from there.

Yea scientists just make shit up all the time. Jesus I'm at college in an engineering program, our science libraries aren't packed with bullshit. Do you know how stupid it would sound to someone who had never heard of God for you to say there was some magical ultimate being. If you knew anything about quantam mechanics, and the phenomena of accompanying 'particles' to other 'particles' of light that aren't detected unless you look specifically for them... or that electrons jump to other energy levels... they don't travel there, they just kind of appear there. It all sounds up like messed up stuff, but that's because you're not educated enough.

I was brougtht up in a Catholic family, going to Catholic schools, and I found that they make up more shit than anyone. When a nun couldnt answer a question about anything, she'd insert some cmoment about 'It does it because God made it do it that way' or some complete bullshit to avoid saying 'I don't know'... if ANYTHING thats most likely how 60% of the stories originated in the Bible.

In my mind, there is no doubt that an influential man named Jesus existed, but IMO, i dont think he was the 'son of God'

If anything, I have a psudo spritual outlook on afterlife, almost a very scientific view.

You're right, the earth isn't that old, we can get a good estimate of the earth's age, we're talking about the age of the universe. Which is actually has a rough estimate of that, but here's what we can't measure, the time it took for anything to exist at all, there is no way to investigate that, it's all a matter that this stable fluctuation had such a small probability that most likely it took a ridiculous amount of years for that to occur, but you can't measure that, since it was the first thing, I'll go dig up some of my readings to help explain vacuum flutuations.

And with your vaccuums, sure there could be a vacuum and then you talk about gasses and particles that are formed. And the magical particle that is 'created' by the fluctuations in a vacuum. What is that particle? is it Nitrogen or what? So where did it come from? How was this particle made and what is it? then how does it go from being that little particle into another particle? Asexual reprodcution? I think not. Electrolosis?? nuh uh. And then the big bang? Where did those gasses come from that created it??They would have to have been formed. Even the vacuum, what caused it?? A lot of people seem to be not capable of comprehending the concept of absolute, complete, total nothingness.

Ok, here's what I believe.

I am agnostic, which basically means that i don't know if there is a higher being or not. Being agnostic doesn't mean that I haven't thought about if they is a God or not. Being agnostic means that I'm not totally convinced that there is a God and I'm not totally convinced that there isn't a God. So I've weighed both sides of the story thoroughly, and there is not enough evidence for me, on both sides of the story, to convince me of the truth. I hope this is making some sort of sense.

I really do not like the whole aspect of how some forms of the Christain religion push it on atheists to stop trying to convince people that there isn't a God, while they are doing the same exact thing to other people, by trying to convince them to believe in God. It's quite hypocritcal if you ask me. Keep in mind, I'm not saying that all Christain faiths do this, but some do. This agrivates me greatly. Let people believe what they want to believe!! Be tolerent of their beliefs!! Be respectful of their beliefs!!

What also pisses me off is that, at my school, some of the kids that go to young life say that they are agaisnt drinking and smoking, while they go off and drink and get high on the weekends; yet another hypocritical aspect. Not all of the kids do this, but some do.

Well there's my look at it, I hope it made sense.

Ok, I'm going to dumb down everything I've read and known to try and make this as easy to understand as possible...
1) This is the hardest step but you must imagine absolutely nothing, don't think outerspace without matter, imagine no space, and no matter.
2) Quantam theory holds that probability, not absolutes, rules any physical systems. This is what I was saying before. We don't even have to picture this in terms of time, just in terms of probability, the likeliness of an event to happen, you can have probability w/o time.
3) Anyone who has taken chem has heard about the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Where you can no the speed of an atom, and not its location, or its location and not its speed. This is one of the problems with atoms, it is IMPOSSIBLE to predict the behavior of a single atom, or even 10 atoms together, we can only predict what happens in a substantial group of atoms. We'll refer to the actions of one particle or atom as uncertainties.
4)Quantam measurements have shown that vacuums are also subject to these same uncertainties. So what does this mean? ahhh yes just as individual atoms in groups of matter appear and reappear... well for lack of better terms you could understand, the same thing happens in vaccuums. Although we can't direcly observe it, when tests are run on the strengths of a known mount of electron activity it shows that these fluctuations and things popping out of n othingness, are indeed real, in fact its happening in space right now. Granted these fluctuations of particles usually only last for 10E-21 seconds.

5) Here comes the kicker, how do we get the universe from having one sustained fluctuation. Well this fluctuation is referred to as a 'false vacuum' the theory is very difficult to understand and i doubt i can really explain it that well, it's not really a vacuum it's a type of matter that acts very strangely. Imagine a gas, as the gas expands, it also disperses. However a false cavuum actually expands and retains its energy without dispersing, meaning it stays concentrated while it expands. This means RAPID EXPANSION, because you're not decreasing the density, only increasing it based on its nature to inflate. Calculations with false vacuums even show that a path of a valse vacuum only 1 billionth the size of a proton would rapidly and exponentially grow to the size of a marble in 10E-34 second!!! That would be exactly like a pea growing to the size of a Milky way... yes I know it sounds strange, but hopefully if I haven't convinced you of how something could come to be, you now have something to go on if you'd like to read about it further.

Oh and I'd also like to add, that the known and computed matter of the universe added to the total binding gravitational force of the universe, equals zero, which also supports that the universe theoretically could have came from absolutely nothing.

To those who ask that there must be a reason for everything, such as the beggining of the universe and particles popping out of nowhere, why does there have to be a why? why does there have to be a reason for everything? why can't everything just happen the way it happens? i'm not trying to pick a fight here or anything. but that's just my way of coming up with answers to those questions....some questions sometimes have to be left unanswered.

Very interesting grav-tech, i sort of understand what your trying to explain. But i am in Chem and i have learned the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, it's very mind boggling. You know something is there, but you really only see the probabilty of it's being. That part is really hard to explain, i don't think i did a good job of explaining it, it's hard to explain.

Yea don't worry, I'm always afraid of confusing people, because I even have a seminar course on thermodynamics and I had to come up w/ an equation that could calculate even the temperature of the universe based on the excitation levels of an arbitrary amount of electrons in a reaction. I'd have to say science is fascinating, and a rush when you know enough to start putting things together.

I think it's called radioactive decaying carbon dating. (or something like that) It's when scientist look at the 'layers' of radioactive decay of carbon on a iceman or animal of prehistoic times. Over time, the carbon decays and forms 'layers'. By measuring the 'layers' of radioactive decay, they can determine how old the specie is. I may be wrong, but I think that's the basic idea of it.

sure, nothing at all, absolute nothingness. If there is no atoms, perfect full on total nothingness, there is no vaccuum, there can't possibly be one, there's just complete nothingness. You can't have fluctuations in nothingness because there it nothing to fluctuate, it's complete and utter emptiness. A single atom cannot form from complete anti-being. It just can't happen.

actually andy, i am probably not as well educated as half the people on this post, i am only in 10th grade. but it is just hard for me to believe that something can just pop up out of absolutely nothing. there is nowhere for the particles to come from, and once they are there, where do they go? i just think scientists say things before they are completely researched so they have an argument.

Scientific fact and theory makes a ton more sense that some God just controls the universe, and if this God does control the universe, then where did he come from? I mean everything has to come from something, God couldnt have just popped out of no where. I choose to think that God just came from men's imagination.

Also, there may be evidence that jesus lived, but that doesnt mean he was Gods son, I mean all this crap about mary being a virgin and whatnot, haha, I bet joseph was tappin that ass, maybe she was asleep or something.

I happen to go to a Catholic school and i don't really believe in God, i just go to this certain school because all the teachers in the other schools in my area are ignorant...my advice is to just view people who are all preachy as 'entertainment'.. they are actually quite funny.
Another little anicdote that really doesn't have anything to do with anything is my friend who doesn't really believe in anything either went up and took the cracker from the lady at mass and put it in his pocket..everyone said that he was disgracing jesus or something so he bid it off to whoever would pay the most to eat the cracker and save jesus.

Well things pop from out of nowherer in part from Quantam physics, if you ever decide to educate yourself in the area, you are simply going to be amazed at the laws of that area of science, it's totally different from Newtonian physics which you are all used too, I love max planck for showing the light.

I agree with linkray. Science laws and theories, such as quantum mechanics, do have more evidence than 'God just saying that's they way things will be'.

Take evolution for example. I believe that the evidence behind evolution is much more substantial that god just saying 'let there be men', or whatever he said.

I'm not trying to preach this to anybody, I'm just stating my opinion.

here's what i believe....i belive god created the universe and on earth he put life. nothing spectacular, just a unicellular organism. the organism kept reproducing, and while doing so there were many mutations. the theory 'survival of the fittest' took role and the cells w/ useful mutations survived and passed on their genes. this kept going on for millions and millions of years and then the first homoniod evolved and it kept evolving into what is the present day homp sapiens spaiens

Yeah, I'm the same as you madtrixx. It's quite simple really to believe in both but it's not so much evolution, more adaption that we're talking about. Like humans are the same as they always have been but small adaptions might take place. Like they do with some animals or plants also. Like the conditions may not be quite right for optimum usage of the environment. Evolution however, contradicts itself in so many hundreds of ways and isn't even a complete theory.

And Andy, a vacuum suggests the containment of nothingness. A container or some form of outer limits. There is no such thing in what I am talking about, I mean absolute nothingness, so much nothing that there isn't a vacuum. A vacuum is still something, I mean full on emptiness.
