Yeah,pretty much. This flies directly in the face of the constitution; only congress can authorize formal war with a country, and that power can't be granted to the president, even if they want to. This is so incredibly illegal by our own Amerian standards and by United Nations standards it's ridiculous. I had a list from Amnesty International of all the rules that we are breaking, which we signed along with every other civilized and non-civilized nation in the entire world. We are no longer a sleeping superpower that fights for good in the world, we are simply a global bully that will do whatever the fuck it wants.
The whole idea of preemptive strike is ludicrous; no innocent Iraqi civilians and United States soldiers should die for what Iraq might do (but wouldn't do even if they could because they have no motive to attack the United States or it's interests.)
Saddam simply wants to cause chaos in the Middle East so that the situation gets out of hand and other countries turn on the US, and WW III gets started. If we attack him right now, we make him a martyr and do exactly what he wishes.
I hate everything about the Bush administration with every fiber of my being.

bush is a total moron, hes fucking attacking iraq with little or no evidence against them making weapons of mass destruction. fuck his little war on terrorism, he promised to get bin laden a year ago, now bush or the government wont even metion bin laden, now hes trying to start another little war on 'terrorism'. If the issue can be resolved peacefully, then for fucks sake why go and bomb the country, hes worse than than the terrorists hes trying to fight.

i don't think this is good at all. Just the idea of the possibility of bypassing the UN in a military engagement is a terrbile mistake.if you take that step, it makes the UN a basically powerless, you are basically setting a new worldwide standard. The new standard would be that if a country sees soemhting on another country, they can go in regardless of world opinions, because the US did the same thing.

What we really need is the US to step back, and the UN to be a little more aggressive in it's dealings with Iraq.

Bush is being so gay right now. It is clear that he is only doing this for himself because every virtually every American has opposed to it. Bush just wants to finish the job his dad was to pussy enough to finish when they were over there and he wass less of a threat. But he did try to 'kll my dad' I just wnna see that go out of office. Kami and Steve and some of you know what they are talking about. But you guys that are just like 'Fuck Bush, hes gay, he has no reason' are fucking morons.

What Kami and Steve say are real opinions, the rest of you are just jumping on a bandwagon with little to no supporting arguments other than 'It's Bushes fault' If you knew how the American Govt. worked AT ALL, you'd know that Bush is a figurehead, he doesnt make his own descisions most of the time. And saying that we have no evidence for Saddam having weapons is fucking stupid. Have SOME respect for your country.

I am tired of just general America bashing. SUPPORT your arguments with non-overused points that make no sense.

This war is NOT for economic gain. We barely get ANY oil from the mid-east at all. And the fact is that starting a small war would just suck the economy dry anyways. They know this.

All the oil talk could be put to rest if it weren't for tree-huggers like yourselves deciding that we can't drill in Alaska because of the UNPROVEN opinion that a bunch of Caribou would have to find a new place to munch on grass.

Personally I think that Iraq has been enemies with us since the gulf war. So when they are making chemical weapons and shit after September 11 when all those fuckers are all happy that we got planes run throught our bulildings I would be scared too. Plus the fact that Sadaam was fundin Osama. Ummmm......I say we bomb the shit out of em. Even my brother who is in the army and will be putting his life on the line is ready to go over there.

Yea people don't understand the meaning of an economic war. War stimulated the economy back during the first World War's because we were an industrial nation. Take a look around, where are all the American industries at? Oh yea they've packed up and found cheaper labor elsewhere. This is one reason we have ghetto's, the blue collar base of America has nowhere to get jobs. America sells ideas not products... although we still are the leading exporting nation in the world. This isn't early 20th century America anymore, we are the same as Japan, we sell technology and ideas, not hordes of steel which we wouldn't even be using for most of the military anyway.

What's so wrong with the idea about Saddam becoming a martyr?? We might laugh at it because we see him as one of the most despised world leaders of all time, fair enough. But it's similar to Osama bin Laden's case. If he had been killed, his people and his followers would have treated him as a martyr. His image and his legacy would have been glorified to make him a huge inspiration and almost someone of a worship-worthy person to those who followed him. A scary though really, the same is possible with Saddam except I think most of the Iraqi public actually hate him too.

I 100% agree w/ Osama being a martyr, but Sadamm doesn't have a following like Osama. Sadamm is a ruthless dictator, he's not martyr material. Hell ruthless dictator isn't even a good premise, if we killed Castro, he'd be a martyr for Communism, he's not ruthless though, he has issues but that's just because he's a Communist stuck in the 50's and it's inherent for us countries who are capitalist and even some that are socialist look down upon him.

i just think its rediculous that bush wont mention anything about our 'war on terrorism' or how he promised to find osama bin laden. the talk these days is about Saddam. the UN outlawed Iraq's right to make nuclear weapons, but it doesnt mean our nation needs to take it upon ourselves to stop every other military threat in this world.

Thank you so much for starting this thread. This issue has been troubling me for the last couple days.
Why do we have a right to go to war with Iraq? We have none what so ever. We assume that Iraq has these 'weapons of mass distruction'. So we have no solid evidence of this. This will easily turn into a 21st century witch hunt. Its like: here we'll hog tie you to a bunch of rocks and if you float your a witch, if you die OOOPPS, guess we fucked up?!? Basically thats what we are doing, sorry for destroying your country, we thought you some 'illegal' weapons. Our country would never admit, to owning such weapons even though i'm sure we have some. If the US was to be searched, Bush and Congress would do the same exact thing Suddam has/had done. Our country needs to realize, just because we are 'superpower' (sorry, hate to use that term) WE CAN NOT SET A DOUBLE STANDARD. I'm very scared of what may come from congress' decision and apoligive for any harm our country may inflict in the near future.

Yes, gmram, we've been enemies since the Gulf War... this may have something to do with the fact that U.S. airplanes have been bombing Iraq almost daily for the past 11 years.

and _ski_bum, we actually do have some pretty good proof that Iraq DOES have chemical weapons and is probably doing nuclear research as well... and I know that if I had the U.S. on my back I'd be doing the same here.

It's a FACT that Pakistan has nuclear weapons and has been very close to using them on India- the two are threatening each other with nukes all the time. It's also a very unstable country- the current leader, Gen. Musharraf, led a coup against the government three years ago, promising to restore a democracy... hasn't happened. And yet, the US has done NOTHING at all, not even speak out, against Pakistan's posession of weapons of mass destruction and its blatant military dictatorship. Why? Because it's our 'ALLY', mainly, that Musharraf supported us in the war in Afghanistan. Fact is, the man doesn't even have control over his government, and I can guarantee that there are more terrorists in Pakistan then in Iraq. Nevertheless, we go after Iraq, showing definitively that this 'war on terrorism' no longer has anything to do with terrorism.

Were is this 'proof'? We need to be able to show the UN and the rest of the world this before, we just go blowing up Iraq. We need to do what Kennedy did, showing the proof of the missles of Cuba, although it might 'threaten' our national security, it is necessary before starting a freaking war!

An interesting fact to note is that during the cruise missile bombardment of Afghanistan in... was it 1998?... that the Navy ran completely out of cruise missiles, and a whole production line of them was rushed to make up for it. These babies cost $500,000 a pop.

Five hundred grand adds up when you consider the hundreds of missiles fired, the cost of the ships firing said missiles, the cost of fuel for said ships, the payment of men servicing said ships and said missiles, the food for said men, the air support and intelligence for said operations... yeah.

and yes, as Jibtech said, firing cruise missiles and occupying Iraq are two very different things. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm eighteen and registered with Selective Service, and I sure as hell don't want to see my ass slogging through Mesopofuckingtamia in the middle of a second Vietnam.

Yes, you are a fucking hippie if you believe the propaganda that drilling for oil will destroy the enviroment in Alaska.

The companies have developed safe techniques to drill, and ship oil so that it DOESN'T 'destroy' the enviroment. I had to write a report on it last year, and I did extensive research from the point of view that it WAS destroying the enviroment. And, all I found was a bunch of bullshit that green peace, and the Sierra club puts out in order to get more members (and therefore more $$ in their pockets, do you really think those groups are out to save the enviroment?)

The only real reason to not make an attack is the reason that THE NEW WORLD STANDARD! And it'd be anything but positive. Just refer to my previous post in this thread.

As for what needs to be done...
Both the UN and the US are at fault right now. The US is being too much of a global bully, but at the same time, the UN will not be aggressive enough in its demands and actions. We need both sides to reach a middle ground.

Hmmm released by the government, yes lets believe them. I believe it is the same administration that also said if we cut down the trees we will have less forest fires. Go BUSH! Anyway, It says here (Oil) and many other sorces that alaskan oil could be depleted as soon as 2030. I can show you more sources if you are intrested. As for now, I am pretty sure no one knows how much oil there really is in Alaska. So we should leave it alone.
