I am now a paid park digger at Sundown in Dubuque, Iowa. I compare it to playing minor league baseball. It's not the majors (out west) but im geting paid to ride what I setup and am so thankfull for the staff to give me a chance when they don't even know who I am! But i am a hard worker who previously did it all for free at my old podunk ski hill where i began, and that is where my heart remains, and going to school to become a professional pilot all at the same time.
Skiing
Some people complain about how there park sucks. I feel sorry for them, because I started skiing where there was only a couple of rusty rails with large ruts and bombholes. I asked for shovels because I wanted to learn how to ride on something that was safe to ride. They said no!:( So I started taking shovels and going out when nobody who gave a damn was around and cleaning the stuff up. The staff was wondering who was doing such a good job and found out it was me so they let me take shovels when ever I wanted. I never got paid but it sure helped me learn how to ski, and I was the reason why a lot of my friends would go riding all of the time. A lot of ski areas in the midwest have nice terrain parks but the locals are always complaining how it is so "shitty". Fuck you, this shit is expensive and people sue. Places like Tyrol Basin in Wisconsin, from what I have riddin so far, for their early season is way more than I can ever expect from a Midwest hill. So far they have a park crew who grabs a shovel when ever they are needed. Plus sketchy features sometimes make you a better rider for when you get the chance to go out west. Operating a ski area is a risky business but those who care make all of the difference. So care for your local hill, donate shovels to the park crew, create a general terrain park fund for new features, and ride at your own risk. This is not a theme park this is a terrain park and you are the one makeing the decisions, your not riding a roller coaster. Welcome to the USA, we have freedom and the price you pay is personal responsibility for your actions.
