Subject: Tagging Threads- Solution to the Search Problem
There has been a lot of discussion about the issues surrounding re-posts. I think what it comes down to is that people are not using the search bar because it lacks basic functionality (the ability to search thread content). As a result, it is nearly impossible to find the original thread.
The obvious solution would be to re-write the search bar so that it can search thread contents. However, it sounds like this is a major piece of work and will not happen any time soon.
Another solution would be for the community to start using the thread titles to accurately describe the contents of the thread. The problem with this is that it is difficult to reinforce. Also, most people like to use their thread title the same way a newspaper uses headlines, to try and draw in eyeballs.
Since both of these solutions have serious issues, I propose a third possible solution to the search issue called thread tagging. What this would do is allow the thread creator to tag the thread with words that accurately describe the thread contents. It would essentially be an invisible secondary thread title. This would allow users to still use a catchy title, but would allow for the thread to be easier to find. yeah that is definitely a potential issue. I don't think it would necessarily be a bigger issue then the whole link bait thread title issue we have right now though. I frequently click threads with a certain thread title and soon find out the contents have nothing to do with that subject at all. It is hard to say how much it would be abused. The problem is with patience. When I make a thread, I like the ease and simplicity. I'd probably be a bit put off if I had to start scrolling through categories etc

Yeah that is the thing I am not sure about. It would have to be answered by admins I suppose. I think it would be easier cause you could just add the tags onto the title in the system (being invisible to us of course). We think alike, i remember proposing this exact solution to searching for threads i believe last year before the site update. People thoughts back then basically were that if kids are to lazy to label their threads properly and spell them correctly then they wouldn't take the time to tag this thread properly.

It shouldn't be too much work for mods. It's really just typing a couple of words for each thread. If that's still too much, maybe we could have a system where any 'trustworthy' member of the site is able to add tagwords - say, anybody with karma above 50,000.

I feel like this could work. I don't think the problem with mistagging just to get more views would last long for a few reasons. 1) What benifit does it have when lots of people look at your thread? 2) The amount of sheer flaming and hate on people who mistag threads will deter many people. 3) Make mistagging a bannable offense and it should be much less of a problem.

If you want to limit it to thread creator, I don't see that helping since they will treat it just like a title, and will probably be to lazy, or create unnecessary ones.
If you want to open it up to admins and mods that could work, but at the same time its not like they don't have enough going on as it is. Having to clean up tags would be tedious, having to be the only ones tagging the threads would be unrealistic.
That leaves letting anyone tag the thread, and I think I just showed why thats a bad idea. Actually TGR got rid of their thread tagging for the same reason, It just stopped being helpful. The reason TGR forums have a better search function is because the code is written way better then the one NS uses.
If you want the search function to work your just going to have to bite the bullet and write all that nasty code.
