pressure is caused by atoms of either liquid or gas acting on a surface. In the vacuum of space there is no pressure so there is no pressure barrier at the end of space. Did no one read my previous posts?
ohh yea. shit.. theres like a lack of pressure right... like if we went out in space with no suit on your body would blow up to like double or triple the size right..

Whenever I think about the universe and its vast lengths and astronomical things that surround it, I can't help but think of the cat in Men in Black. It had a necklace that contained a universe. That always blew my mind thinking that could be the universe I'm in right now.

To Tasche, if you mean Kaku's physics of the impossible , yea i read that one. Was pretty cool, Brian Greene's the Elegant Universe is really cool too but somewhat more involved in the physics.
Actually Kaku wrote a book called "Visions" in like 1998 or so, maybe early 2000 where he made prediction, like the expansion of the internet, flat screen tvs, mapping the human genome. All of which came true.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but current theories say that there is an end to the universe, meaning no matter exists beyond its boundaries. however, it is said that the universe is expanding into the space outside of it, so i wouldn't say that there's a wall; it's just empty and at absolute 0 kelvin beyond the boundaries of the universe. edwin hubble and other scientists have come up with explanations of cosmological red shift that describe mathematically the drifting apart of galaxies and the expansion of the universe, and it's over my head but has to do with frequencie's of color as well.
Yes thats getting to the right point,   The Red light thoery  is something along the lines of that everything is moving away,  which supports the bang thorey or a variation of it,  there was an explosion (caused by what who knows) and everything is now moving away, thus expanding the univers.

Same with me. If you think space ends, then what is there a wall? How can that be but if you say it is ever expanding and infinite then that has to be relative to something. Its an absolute mind fuck.

Michio Kaku has some pretty wild explanations of physics if you watch some of his youTube video. I have been meaning to check out his book, but havent yet gotten around from it.. Understanding astro physics, space theories and trying to comtemplate just how large space is. a light year is equal to a little less than 6 trillion miles.

The thing is is that we cant even get close to these other galaxies because our spaceships move very slowly. We would have to go faster than the speed of light to get there in a life time, but science has proven that matter cant go the speed of light, so we are fucked.

I think the foremost theories today are saying that the universe is constantly expanding outward from the center of the universe.  It's still moving outward from the big bang.  So it doesn't have an end, it's constantly getting bigger.  My theory is this:  Black holes suck in literally everything, including other black holes.  The big bang theory requires certain conditions to be met in order to have a big bang.  Those conditions are having all matter compressed into an inconcievably small space.  That condition is the definition of the center of a black hole.  So my idea is that the lifespan of the universe is cyclical.  Eventually, one black hole will swallow up the entire universe, and then it will all start over again with another big bang.  It makes sense right?

just this think that it's infinite is crazy enough... yeah we may be insignificant, however, we need to concentrate on our world. Because if we get too caught up with "something out there" we lose sight as to what's here, right in front of us.

So apply that to other life forms and you've basically got your point: that there might be lifeforms that thrive on things completely different than what we think life should have to appear. And other intelligence that wouldn't be comprehensible with our. Intelligence so different we wouldn't probably percieve it as intelligence, because we wouldn't notice anything.
Reminds me of something my friend brought up. We developed to have the senses we perceive, but that doesn't mean that they are the only ones that exist. There could be a lifeform that exists with a completely different set of senses, thus could live amongst us without our knowing. Not sure about how I feel about the whole concept, but it's interesting to bring evolution and our perception into play.

makes sense to me, except one thing. If that theory was true, the universe would not be accelerating. It has been proven that everything in the universe is not slowing down, as one would think after the big bang, but it is speeding up away from the epicenter of the bang.

Did you know that a marble is about half the size between the earth an an atom? Think about that shit.

And there were theories about atomic structure that it resembled the solar system with the sun being the proton and the planets being electrons but this is not the case.

There is a law of scale and many other factors that have ruled out this possibility. So the idea that each cell or atom contains a universe, though elegant, is probably incorrect.

There have also been studies done, based on what we know about life, that have predicted how many advanced civilizations there are in the universe and it is very small percentage of planets. Many criteria must be met, must have water, must be correct distance from sun, must be shielded by large near by planets, must be correct spot in the universe, must have circular orbit as opposed to elliptical orbit. The list goes on and turns out our solar system and planet combo is extremely rare in the universe. That being said the shear size of the universe yields the statistical possibility that there must be intelligent life out there. This I can say for sure beyond a statistical doubt. However again remember that out of our planets 6 billion year we have been here for 1 million if you are extremely generous on what you call intelligent life. That is like 4 days of your life if you live to be 80 years old. All of human evolution, wars, poems, everything taking place in 2 days of your life.

So There is intelligent life out there but even if there is the universe is so vast, and on such a large time scale that the possibility of a class 3 civilization, if they even give a shit about us, coming into contact with us, when we exist, for the 2 days of life, out on the edge of the universe, with nothing to offer... That's what makes me sad. If that makes any sense...

So yes, we are small, insignificant, lack the ability to comprehend our size, and even by our own planets standards we are pretty unsuccessful. But what are you going to do, tomorrow you will wake up, and once again your world will revolve around you.
that first part about the marble is just so impossibly hard to fathom. incredible.

Love this thread,

I have been reading a new book that is blowing my mind.  It is called "The Singularity is Near" By Ray Kurzwile (Sp) And it is awesome.  He plots human innovation, computing power, economies, population.  Pretty much every litmus test of human progress and it is a straight line on an exponential scale.  This means that we are living in exponential times.  More data was created, transferred, and processed in the past 2 years than all of human history combined.  Moores law dictates that computer power doubles every 16 months.  We have millions of times more computing power than just a few years ago.

Anyway, we are on the "heal" of the curve.  Meaning that up to this point human innovation seamed linear beacuse the start of an exponential curve is linear then it goes almost vertical.  Basically hold on to your fucking tits because what is going to happen in our lifetimes (which could be thousands of years) is going to drastically change everything we know.

Nano technology, molecular computing, in 40 years we will have computers more powerful than the human brain and be able to directly connect with computers.  Think about this for just one second.  If you are directly connected with a human strength computer, then connected to the internet, you could communicate instantly with any one in the planet and have instant, seamless, access to the entirety of human knowledge.  Even uneducated people could solve proofs that today stump even the brightest scientists.  There are no hard problems there are only problems that are limited by levels of intelligence.

Anyway I highly suggest the book and I also recommend that you get a degree in math and science it will be worth exponentially more than a degree in communications or some bull like that.

The problem is that we will never even begin to comprehend the actual workings of the universe. We can understand it to a point, but there will be a point where we just cant know anymore, simply because of the limitations of being human, along with the way the universe works and the things we are able to observe etc.
I think however, that once a unifying theory of physics (between the quantum and non-quantum worlds) is made, we will be able to gain a vast amount of knowledge.

However, it is a bit like trying to ride a bike to Pluto... Understanding the real workings of the universe is something that we just cant do... Because when it all comes down to it, the universe only exists because we observe it...

That probably made no sense.

Joy is the response of a lover receiving what he loves. This is the joy we feel when skiing powder... This overflowing gratitude is what produces the absolutely stupid, silly grins that we always flash at one another at the bottom of a powder run. We all agree that we never see these grins anywhere else in life.

in space, time is different. in some instances it cant even be considered a constant because of the scale. We can see right through time because the light doesn't travel fast enough. in fact, our sun could implode right now and we wouldn't know for 8 minutes. Because of the scale, in space time cannot be measured in days or hours.

have you heard like the new facts known about the human brain though? humans only use a maximum of 15% of our brain. and thats only a select few of people like newton and einstein. theres theories that if a human could use 100% of our brain, then we could do things like telekenisis and teleportation, not to mention figure out things like how to go back in time, or how to travel faster then the speed of light.

allthough we may not be alone in this universe.. think about the timescale!we humans have discovered science for like 300 years ago, and we have been trying to kill eachother since the beginning of our race. when you think about how long our race have existed in comparrison to how long the universe has, and you scale that time down to 24 hours. our race haven't even been around for a sec. And when you think about the countless civilasations that may be out there, also think about that they also may have destroyed eachother looooong time ago. and that a time-window for one civilasation is soooo tiny. and the distance between us all is sooooo big! It would be nothing but a miracle if any of us would detect eachother because, 1: we would not live in eachothers time, 2: even if we did, we would not see eachother, cause all we ever see over huge distances is the past, and 3: we would probably kill our own race looong before we would even exist long enough to witness any contact from an alien race.
