i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but burton is rider owned. they also invented snowboarding. poaching was just a funny way to get stupid rebellious kids to buy burton gear. it was a marketing scheme, nothing more.

on a side note, i ride on k2 gear
Lets go adventuring. I'll get my sword.

Dear Jake Burton Carpenter,

On Behalf of all your upper class, white cutomers, i would like to thank you and your gian corporation for fighting the "fascist" depredations of four ski areas. Thanks for takin a break from making American Express ads to take on this massive source of human suffering and in justice.

A 5,000$ prize to any snowboarder who provides video documentation of poaching the four ski resorts that of last winter didnt allow snowboarding? That is impressive. I bet you make that much in 15 minutes of filming for your Hewlett-Packard commercials.

Trying to create division where there is none in order to keep your brand "anti establishment" reminds me of Chevron talking about all the great things they do for the enviroment: it's self serving trash from the rich and powerful. Now that your monopolistic corporation has crushed all the small, rider-owned companies, its time to Fight the Man!

When you catagorize these cki resorts as "facist" your likening them to dictorial regimes that systematically exploit and murder people. Considering that snowboarders as a demographic are among the wealthiest, freest, most privelaged on the planet, and that your sport and your fortune wouldn't exist without skiing, i think you can find a better cause. If you want to fight for human rights, start by moving all production out of china.

The arguement for your cause is the same time and agian: "It's discriminatory! what if they didnt let black people ski there?"

This arguement, besides insulting anyone who has benn opressed due to race, gender, religion, etc.. is pathetically shallow. You're as free to ski at Alta as anyone else. NO, you don't get to take your board on the lift, but you cant play Frisbee golf at a golf course, either.

For the sake of brevity, let's say you can have Deer Valley as far as i'm concerned. Taos needed the buisness and I support their decision. Mad river Glen is owned by a cooperative of shareholders that govers as a collective body. You want to ride at MRG, either by snowboard or toboggan? Buy a share and bring it up before the board.

Alta, on the other hand, is hallowed ground. It is the home and spiritual heart of powder skiing in America. Alta's pioneers of avalanche science, men like Monty Atwater, Ed LaChappelke, and Svere Engen had their lives on the line daily while creating the avalanche protocol that allows all of us, including you, to ride safely. In fact, Atwater was wounded while fighting actual fascism in the Army's 10th Mountain Division during World War II.

The ski vs. snowboard fued was always propogated by gapers on both sides. You're ressurecting it now because you know that your company has become a mainstrem, corporate, static, conformist fashion show.

When the kids who've been lining your pocket cease feeling rebellious because they all look the same wearing your expensive products, Burton is smoked. And for the same reason that China would be better off without a brutal monolithic regime running the show, snowboarding might be better of without Burton.

- Hans Ludwig
Mr. Ludwig is a hypocrite. The fued is "porpogated by gapers", yet he supports the ban for snowbarding at Alta because it's "hallowed Ground"? In other words, how dare dirty snowbarders strap in on a mountain that has such deep roots within skiing? Oh sorry, is "the home and spiritual heart of powder skiing in America". Come on people! This guy is either a gaper or a hyprocrite by his own definition. Either way he sounds like a bitter, old man.Burton may be mainstream, but Jake got it there on his own dime and and keeps it that way. Props to a rider owned company that kicks the ass of all those big corporations jumping on the bandwagon.

If Burton wasn't here, snowboarding would not be where it is today. If sowboarding wasn't what it is today, sking would have died back in the late 80's early 90's. So, we all depend on each other. Also most smaller Brands, like Libtech who is owned by a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange, fall under larger coporate umbrellas. So some of you haters on here need to get your facts straight.

My guess is both.

Great post Loach.

I was hoping to be done with this thread but shit it's hard to ignore, what's really disturbing is all the kids on this site who are cheering on some hypocrite gaper's attempt to stir up ski vs snowboard hate?

The real sad thing is that it's working, now we have kids from this site cruising over to snowboard forums just to post this stupid article and beak off at boarders? Sigh.....

as long as they dont try to monopolize the market theyre gonna be fine. burton sponsors so much shit and puts their shit everywhere. tell me one shop that dosent carry burton. Im pretty sure u can buy burton at target or walmart. They are the microsoft of the snowboard world, their stuff is good, but you get to a point where your absolutely sick of their product. They basically give their boards to mtns as rentals, they saturate the market to the point that ppl get sick of it. I would almost say the same thing for salomon (yes i know im gonna get some hate here but listen), nearly 50% of the riders at my hill ride salomon skis. 75% have some salomon product. now im not saying that salomon is bad, but since everyone has them, it makes me want to ride something else to be different from the crowd. Especially among the less experienced riders, they see that salomon has alot of great riders, and with jib academy, and a huge range of products, they assume that salomon is the "cool" stuff to use, paying no attention to product specs or how it rides. Burton is the same way, when the ppl start out they see shaun white riding burton everything, every part of his body has burton on it or a burton sticker. so they think that burton is the best just cause the best guy rides it. thus leading to an oversaturation of the market, and hatred by core riders.

but at least with skiing i think we have way more ski companies than snowbaording has board companies, i may be wrong but thats how it seems to me

that article brought nothing new to the table, other than proving burton's point. yes, burton went way over the top in describing fascist ski resorts and equating not being able to snowboard at alta with racism. anyone who has experienced true discrimination should be offended and pissed at burton. however, what was clearly a marketing gimmick has proven to be more, if solely for the fact that Hans Ludwig, after calling out burton, gave the most bullshit reason yet for why alta should be skier only. Whose the gaper now, Hans?

Will snowboarding be better off without burton, so all the ski companies that make snowboards can fill the void? No. Ski companies should either be sending Jake Burton thank you cards every christmas, or death threats. Burton did what every ski company failed at doing, reviving skiing. Burton and Sims changed the entire ski industry more than shaped skis did. Now, Burton is a global leader in outerwear, making products that rival and sometimes are better than arcteryx (owned by salomon), cloudveil, mtn hardwear, etc and use their huge R+D budget to make cool shit (burton came up with welded seams). burton is still a small (relatively) private company and, most importantly, snowboarding is the priority. ask k2, quiksilver (they own lib tech, rossi, DC), volcom, solomon, what their priorty is. if they say the integerity of snowboarding/skiing their shareholders might be just a little bit pissed.

while, i don't agree with burton's team managing style, or how they throw their weight around the industry and i think most of their products are overpriced, they are a much better ambassodor for snowsports than the random dude whose shareholders own k2. in fact, they are better ambassadors than powder mag or hans ludwig, the gaper that he is (according to his own definition).

so true. fyi burton owns ronin, anon and red. its a total monopoly.
i'm not sure if this post is supposed to be sarcastic or not but here is some real info: ronin, anon, red, gravis and analog are all burton brands, or spin-offs. they started these lines and companies. the only snow-related company they bought was fourstar canada cuz it was a steal. fourstar canada is forum, jeenyus, special blend and foursquare. someone else already posted their non-snow brands in this thread.

I am really curious as to see how Jake Burton responds to this. Unfortunately, I don't think he will be that effected by this article. The money to his name, the popularity, the mainstream of it all isn't phased by petty things such as this. However, this could lead to more sweepstakes/competions or whatever you would like to call it once again starting up the battle between skiing and snowboarding.

Fuckin' Gapers.
The sport of skiing consists of wearing three thousand dollars' worth of clothes and equipment, then driving two hundred miles in the snow in order to stand around at a bar and get drunk.

honestly, they truly are.

i work at a sports store and we tried to get burton shit so that we had "the company" for snowboarding. everyone that works at the store and snowboards doesnt even like most of burtons stuff. they say the higher end stuff is decent, but not worth the $800-1000+. but we needed it regardless so that people would in return recognize us as a "legit" store.

so the first year, burton only sends you rental equip. they straight up "dont need" more stores to sell their stuff, so they send you rental gear for the first year. after that, you can order their actual equip for really fucking high prices and make about 30% when it sells. this year we didnt even get this years stuff until december. made numerous calls, emails, and just got ignored. but, stores need them because if a store doesnt carry burton, they are viewed by the ignorant and uninformed public as a "bad" store. a girl wanted to order a certain board and we had to tell her that we didnt even have our stuff in yet for this year (this was december). she came back a few weeks later and we did eventually order it, but still. it makes our legit store look terrible. we're contemplating not carrying burton, but we have to in order to stay alive in the snowboarding business.

and what an epic bump.

Met the person who was apart of that marketing campaign this fall at the ESWA annual meeting. Really nice lady. Thought she had some great ideas. Well spoken, intelligent, and very appreciative of others opinions.

I loved the letter written by Hans. Almost as much as I loved the ad campaign by Burton. At the end of the day, both did what they were meant to do which is get people talking about certain products. All press is good press.

why should we bash burton for doing what they are doing? yes everything that was said was probally true but does that make us any better? no it makes us look like stuck up assholes.(as skiers)

just let burton crash and burn on their own. if we jump on the hate wagon we will inturn look just as foolish as they do.

I bet Jake wiped his ass with that article, he didn't own jake, I doubt he even gives a fuck about some little magazine that attempts to poke fun at an innovator in both sports. You can't hate on Burton all you want but that contest was funny as fuck, my buddies car got tagged with a poach sticker. Burton is still a great company that allows the companies it buys to still have complete creative freedom, it puts on sick comps and makes dope gear even if it is overpriced. While I do hate their bindings (Pieces of shit) Whoever wrote that should be kissing Jakes ass right now considering he would have no job unless jake was around. I don't like burton all that much either but at least I have some fucking respect for the founders of snowboarding and the people who continue to bring money into both

eTo those  who said about ski companies swallowing each other, as far as I know The biggest company in skiing is  quicksilver  which has rossignol, dynastar,  lange, and look. Roxy too if you want to count it but I put that in with dynastar. Besides that the next biggest I know is K2 which has Line. I dont think ski companies care so much about a huge monopoly but rather just making a good product.

Burton makes good stuff too . Quality stuff at that. I have a hoodie and a backpack from them and both are really dope. But I think Burtons main objective is more to swallow the competition, in everything they can. Lets look at whats under Burtons umbrella:

Burton, Anon, Analog, RED,  Gravis, AK, Ronin, Channel Island Surfboards, Habitat, Alien Workshop, Special Blend, Jeenyus snowboards,  Forum, Four Square,  and Reflex

I mean, really the only people they havent gotten yet is Ride, and the ski companies that also make snowboards. Its ridiculous. Basically, if you buy almost anything snowboard, your supporting burton. and I think thats what their goal is, to be the main heart and soul of the sport
Ride is owned by K2.
