I enjoyed the article because it was well written and humorous, but not particularly because I agree. I'm not a huge fan of Burton for the same reasons I'm not a huge fan of Salomon, Rossignol, and Dynastar. They all make great products (I have Salomon boots and bindings) but every second person on any hill I go to uses one of these four companies. I enjoy the lost look of confusion from people when they they find out I am using skis from a company they haven't heard of and I love the feeling of individuality I get when I am the only person on the hill riding the skis I am. I have the same feeling about the bikes I ride. There are companies I just won't buy, not because they make poor product, but because the market is saturated with it.

Yeah, and that's why I said that thing about being owned. Gotta give credit where it's due....As for the rest, I think we're pretty much on the same page about the no-boarding policies and the article, so no need to argue, you're preaching to the converted.
I was referring to thread title--"Burton gets owned," instead of you getting owned. Sorry about the confusion . . .

burton is a big coreperate company and i bet they take over some of the small companies to. but what i wanna know is if a ski company does this??? like now with snowboarding a lot of my friends boycott burton cuz its to big of a coreperate and buy snowboards from small companies. do you think this can hapen in skiing? will a company like 4front get so big that they arnt cool any more and people will buy other stuff? strange to think about to cuz like, burton kinda invented snowboarding (i think) and probalby started off as a small "cool" thing. now they make to much money so their not cool? so does that mean that small ski companies like moment won't be cool anymore if they make a lot of money form skiing?

"Considering that snowboarders as a demographic are among the wealthiest, freest, most privelaged on the planet, and that your sport and your fortune wouldn't exist without skiing, i think you can find a better cause"

seriously?  shut the fuck up!

Considering that in a lot of ways snowboarding these days has a bigger influence on my skiing than actual skiing, I'm sad to read this article.  I've always thought Burton's proposition for poaching the non-snowboarding resorts was awesome.  It pisses me off so much that there is still such hate and segregation between our 2 sports.  I'm pretty embarassed this article ran in such a sick ski mag.

Similarly, if anyone believes everything you just said, they shouldn't be old enough to vote. Youre an extremists just like the other guy and theres a reason guys like nadar and cheney arent president. you're blind with opposal of his views and the writer of the letter is blind with his.

Sure he makes some good points about burton and their methods of obtaining their image, but its really been pretty harmless to the ski industry and has helped burton maintain their image. thats what a business is all about right? making money and growing. businesses arent required to help push their sport or lead it in any direction. They dont have to have positive relations to parallel sports. Theyre just their to make money and if they have to ruffle a few feathers to do it, they will. Its business.

That being said, he definitely destroyed burton with the "if burton really wants to fight facism they'd move their factories out of china" line.
Why would you call me an extremist? Tell me what's wrong with my argument. I'm not blind with "opposal" (sic). I would be willing to entertain the dudes argument if he had one. Look at my post; I actually spent some time thinking through his points. Compare your post to mine. You take some shots, and then you change the subject instead of backing them up.

This thread is too long  to read every comment, but the article about burton was great.  Almost every person I know refuses to buy burton just because they are so big and just buy all their pros.  That's not to say they don't make quality stuff, but they take out all the little guys in the process.

thanks powder mag.

You, like many on the Burton forum, need to see that this article wasn't bashing snowboarding in any way at all. It was bashing Burton, the company. I'm sure he wasn't going to deny that skiing is in the same group of privaledged people as snowboarding.

I found the article really entertaining personally. I dislike burton as much as anyone.

As for the ski-only mountains, those resorts have the right to exclude snowboarding. Just like the park-only mountains have the right to exclude racers by not having long groomers meant for carving. Nobody on here has a problem with those hills. Just like momentum doesn't allow snowboarders to ski their park or sign up for their camp. It doesn't matter what dumb excuse they have for keeping it exclusive to skiers, really. I don't have an opinion on the mountains themselves, as I have never skied any of them.

What a ridiculous analogy. You are comparing a policy of not allowing certain people to ride in an area where they want to go, to park only hills that allow everyone, but maybe a certain demographic of skiers aren't that into it so they CHOOSE not to ride there.

Of course no one on here has a problem with that, it's a completely different scenario that doesn't compare at all.

Okay, so the park-only hill idea was stupid. I agree. But the ski/snowboard only camps are no different. Whatever, I don't really have much of an opinion on this matter anyways. Doesn't affect me any.

Well, you are right about the camps. Of course there is still an assumption there, in that you don't know for sure that camps like Momentum don't allow boarders.

Yes it's probably a safe assumption, but for the sake of argument, maybe they would let a snowboarder go to momentum, and the only reason they don't go there is by choice, because momentum don't advertise to that market, or have any snowboard coaches. I've never heard a boarder complain that they tried to sign up for momentum and got denied.

I wonder if momentum has ever thought of marketing to snowboarders, I think now that HN is gone, they are the only big camp that started as a ski camp. COC and Windells are both snowboard camps that opened their doors to skiers.

Interesting...

props to powder mag for printing that, when i find it i will surely pick up a copy in support to show my appreciation no matter how little buying a magazine does, but i don't feel like getting into this pointless argument about how right or wrong burton (or powder) really is... this is just a well written burn to demonstrate to burton how worthless their contest really was

Actually it was more like a skier sounding like a whiny little bitch, writing an article in a ski magazine to cry about someone organizing a bunch of fun and harmless poaching of some extremely uptight ski resorts with idiotic policies..

Really?

Who is more whiny?

The people so bent out of shape about not having access to 4 resorts out of the what, 200 or more places to ski and ride in North America?

Or the people who find those people's contest to be immature, and pointless?

Option A sounds a lot more embarrassing to me.

Really?

Yes, really.

You know it's funny, I could understand a bunch of uptight old skiers in Bogner turtlenecks sitting around reading that issue of Powder and going "Yes! Great article, that'll show that darn snowboarding punk and his contest to poach our sacred skier-only hills!!"

But I would have expected a much different response from the NS crowd. NSers probably have a lot more in common with the snowboarders who did the poaching, than with the guy who wrote the Powder article preaching about his "hallowed ground" (By the way, it was Hans Ludwig, why don't you write in and ask him if he's ever hit a rail).

I could care less about common ground. I could care less if boarders were allowed at Alta or not. It doesn't concern me.

A company has the right to choose who can use their product. If you show up at a club that has a dress code wearing ripped jeans and a hoodie, you wouldn't be let in. If you showed up at the country club to play a round wearing a wife-beater, you very well might be denied.

It is those businesses right and choice to not allow you access to their product if they so desire. Just as it's your choice to ski, or your choice to board.

I remember going in the boarder only terrain park when I was younger in the '90s and being yelled at and kicked out. Did it suck? Sure, but in the end it was that ski areas business choice.

I could see being bent out of shape if 95% of ski areas did not allow snowboarding, but it's not that way. There are only .5% that don't allow it, so why care so much about the 4 (actually 3 now), that don't? Does it really matter?

Well then why keep posting?

No need to re-state what you've already said about businesses having the rights to make any stupid decision about who they choose to sell to, we got it the first time.

But whatever, who cares if it's one resort or 50 resorts? The contest was a fun idea and it also made for some funny videos. Some uptight skier journalist crying about it in a big ski magazine just reflects a pouty, lame-ass side of skiing that we could do without.

One issue that hasn't been mentioned is that Alta operates under a National Forest lease.  So while they pay for their rights to the land, its technically public land.  So maybe its not super fair to exlude snowboarders, which are about as close to downhill skiers as you can get (in regards to land use).

Still, it seems to me that the whole "injustice" ploy that snowboarders continue to gripe about is now more about attempting to retain the cool and legitimacy of rebellion from what has largely become the status quo.

Hey,

Glad the article is getting some response. You guys are making so good points as to why it was good, and why it sucked, which is partly why we printed it. I'll let you guys continue to argue the validity of it, but want to clear up one misconception:

Jake Burton Carpenter DID NOT invent the snowboard. He was merely one of several pioneers, along with Tom Sims and Dimitrije Milovich who helped commercialize it.

Jake Burton has tons of cash. He should open a boarder only mountain, then all you ganstas could poach his mountain and make a movie about it. Seriously it's all about money, that's why almost all mountains allow snowboarding. I'm sure Deer Valley and Alta have weighed the pros and cons and think that that it is is to their financial advantage to keep their mountains ski only.

Burton didnt get owned Pwnd or failed by that.

The poach a mountain deal was pretty neat I think. if 90 year olds dont want to deal with reality anymore, and those mountains do not want to make the kind of potential money they could be making... fuck em.

Do you really think Mr Burton came up with the idea? Or even knows what is happening at his marketing dept? Or if he does, do you think he cares? The company is snowboarding. When you can put out that much product, it doesnt make sense to produce it in north america, or europe. Id way rather have cheap labor producing my product than not be able to sell it because my margins are too tiny. "Hey I paid the guy who presses my skis and smokes weed all day 20 bucks an hour, and the quality control is shit, but whatever, Its american made." fuck that!

Capitalism bitches, get on the train!

Fuck powder magazine... all they do is shit on what we have been trying to do for 9 years now. They spit on the legacy of FREEZE and the growth of NS and Freeskier. They shit on the people out there who are progressing the sport and suck the balls of the guys who didnt change with the times. The whole "hey Tanner, stay out of OUR backcountry!" Ideal they have been putting out for so long makes me sick. If youre a hippy or a psuedo earth lover you probably love powder mag, but me... nah, horrible articles recycled over and over, poor writing and so so pictorials. IMO. But hey, at least theyre recycling right?

I did laugh at what the dood wrote though, but I could see him writing in anger more than jest. And that is just sad. I bet he hasnt been to china, etc to see the factories any of the bulk of the snowsport industries product is made and has no idea whats really going on. He just closes his eyes, and see's 5 year old generic looking asians with no fingers and only one eye assembling snowboards in a sewer facility inland china. Way to go homes! Do the reasearch.

You dont go into business to bother with weirdos and hypocrates like this guy. Go have a nice carve and fuck your hybrid!

As a snowboarder, this really sucks to see (the other snowboarders on the other forum, NOT the article posted in Powder Mag). To know that there are snowboarders that are obviously somewhat involved in the culture if they are all chatting online in August about riding and still have this thickskull mentality about the whole skier V snowboarder thing. It makes me curious to know how many snowboarders that are claimin to be "all about the sport" and what not really are, or just following some fad they think is cool and bashin on skiers cuz they think its cool. Seriously what the fuck? If any of them have ever ridin on the mountain through a terrain park, which I would assume they have, (even the BC guys still bomb through the park every now and then) They would now that all the skiers and snowboarders that are throwin down the illist shit are all riding together and gettin stoked off eachother. Even a lot of the begginers who are just learning but have obviously fell in love with the sport(s) are riding together and can see past this bullshit. Fuck, sorry for the rant, but it just disappoints me to see that these two cultures can't get along.

Haha, the guy who posted "it's disc golf, not frisbee golf". Hilarious. Dunno why I found it funny, but I did.
