Ok I,ll make it short and clear: if you are not a certified shop tech or know exactly waht you are talking about, dont anser to any of the binding adjustment questions.

If you lead someone in the wrong direction, you may be responsible for screwing hisknees and maybe other parts of his body big time.

the court suggests under a duty of care, that it was resonably forseeable for billy's legs to be removed due to an excessive DIN setting

I wonder how many successful law suits have been filed against shops and binding manufactures for incorrect DIN adjustment? With all the other variables involved (conditions, speed, skiers honesty in stating weight, height, and ski level ,... and jumps ... I am sure that falls out side of the companies definition of "normal use") not to mention the obvious, that people jack their din the second they leave the shop.

I am just saying, it seems unlikely that a legit lawsuit would be settled based on the on-line recommendation of one interweb douche, and another douches willingness to follow said recommendation.

Besides, I have be tweaking my own din for 15 years  and have yet to have a serious issue. Lots of people tweek their din.

However, when it comes to mounting bindings ... please get it done professionally. I feel  that the only way should ever mount your bindings at home is if home is a ski shop.

Okay so I realize people won't (or shouldnt, anyway) give any advice on what my DIN should be at (as opposed to the person posting before me, sigh), but I was just wondering if you guys could give me some tips...

What events should I look for to tweak my DIN (put it higher or lower, depending on the situation)? Is it a certain style, a certain progression, ... ?
What tips can you give me to check if the DIN setting is more or less okay? How can I check for prerelease and what not ?
How to tell if my DIN is wrong?

Im looking for general guidelines here, so I figure my weight etc doesnt matter at this point. I'd start from what the shop tells me, and probably stick with that. Unless I have prerelease of course

Here:
http://www.dinsetting.com/

That'll give you your correct DIN if you put your info in.
Anything you tweak from there is your business...general rule is that if you feel like you're coming out early, or way to much when you shouldn't be, turn the DIN up in .5 increments until it stops, but ski it a few days each time before you change it again to make sure.

seeing as most of the certified techs reply to this sticky..
im 5'11, 195 lbs, ski 98% park, type 3 skiier, dinsetting .com reccomends a din setting of 9.5, and if i put skiier type 3+ its an 11, im set at 8 right now and do find myself preleasing a lilttle bit..boot size 28.5 what should my DIN setting truly be at?

Need the sole length of your boot, type of binding helps too.

For Salomon or Look/Rossi bindings, assuming your BSL is around 325mm (or between 311-330) then you should be set at 8.5 (@ type 3 skier code)

are you sure on the legalities of that? I am pretty sure that if you are not doing any binding work what so ever (just wax for example) that you aren't responsible for the safe release of the binding. Because most shops will wax/tune outdated technology but won't do binding work without the customer signing off. I am pretty sure there is a much bigger risk management issue with lowering the din without informing the customer then not touching it at all.
true. if i were to do any kind of binding adjustment on a ski that was in for  a tune, but not binding work, i would probably get fired

If you are adjusting the binding for a boot that is 10mm longer, the bootcenter is still in the middle of the boot.  You are essentially adding 5mm to the toe length and 5mm to the heel,  thus adding 10 total.  So when you put it in the toepiece, its only moving back 5mm, the other 5 is compensated for by the heel sliding back on the track
You are correct, sir.

Take them to a ski shop?

ok...so i have a pair of skis that dont have bindings, then i have my mounted skis. The skis without bindings are drilled. Can I unscrew the bindings from the one pair and screw them onto the othr?

It all depends on what the others are drilled for. If you don't know I would take them to a shop to have it done.

even the din chart is extremely inaccurate for most people even if calculated by a proper tech blah blah blah.
Yep. The chart we had at my old place assumed everyone was a complete beginner and needed easy release. So the max din it would recommend was a 6, even for the heaviest, tallest guy.

So when we had tall, heavy guys, who were expert skiers coming in, we were still forced to set a 6 to cover our asses, because even though it was obviously wrong, it's what the chart says. And if you do what the chart tells you, you won't get sued.

Thats an old chart then.  The max value on the real din chart is 14 i believe.
