The other night my roommate and I were sitting outside in the car checking our email. We had just logged on to an unlocked wireless connection, when we heard a tap at the window. Two police officers instantly flung our doors open and insisted to know what we were up to. I told him we were checking our email and he told us we were acting illegally and confiscated our laptops. We were then read our rights and arrested for stealing the internet! haha! It is against the law in NZ to pick up and use an internet signal. If everyone bought laptops and stole the internet the Internet Cafés would go out of business, and that isn't fair. The officer escorted me to the backseat of his cop car.
When we got to the Wanaka police station, my roommate and I were put into separate interrogation rooms where I was told that I could be put in prison for up to SEVEN years!! Are you kidding me? He then said, "just because you can drive on the right side of the road in America, do you think you can do the same here?" Obvious answer: no. "Do you think its ok to go out and get drunk and pass out in the middle of the street?" Haha, what? Well, No. "So, why do you think you can steal the internet?" Really? Did he just make that comparison?
Long story short, after an hour in the interrogation room, and telling us that they had just put two Australians in prison for the same offense, they let us go. My first arrest, I wish it could have been for something even a little bit badass. Has anyone ever been arrested for anything more ridiculous?!
Well, besides the police having too much time on their hands, NZ is really fun. Because of the hurricanes, the weather has been really stormy so we've been finding other things to do besides ski...
Suspension bridge to the Blue Pools
At Snow Park, the triple line and the pipe are finally open, and lift lines are WAY shorter than last year, can't wait for the weather to clear up!! Karaoke night at Shooters is killing it, Curry in a Hurry is as delicious as it has ever been, and there are many new friends in town to be made. Rock on New Zealand!
