Overall
These skis are great for a beginner who needs an all mountain ski that can allow progression in the park as well. I split my time about 50/50 between the park and the other parts of the local mountain and they handled it all well. The durability is par as long as they're taken care of and waxed now and then. I am retiring them to a beater and summer ski now as I am getting a park and big mounatin ski for next season but they did the job for me last season.
Performance
The foils worked really well for me last season. They allowed me to progress all over the mountain. The 07-08 Season was my first full season and these skis let me get comfortable in the park, as well as in some more all mountain riding, and the rare bit of fresh we got on the east coast. They were a really good alternative for me in comparison to buying two pairs of skis my first year.
Design
The Foil graphic is pretty sweet. The left ski was a bit plain towards the tail so I stickered it out a bit but I like the color scheme. The top sheet is very durable as well so it still looks the same as the day one from a distance.
Value
I got a great deal on these. I found the skis at REI for $230 in September 2007 and picked them up fast. They were selling for well over $400 at a local shop. I got them mounted up to some Rossignol Scratch 120 bindings for about $200 as well.
Fit
I was about 5'5" at the beginning of the season when I first got the skis and I went with the 171s. I am now 5'8" and I feel they still fit pretty well. The 171 was a good size at the beginning of the season but now I could benefit from something in the mid to high 170s. The ski's sizing was nice in the park, they're center mounted, so they were pretty relaxed to spin. As an all mountain ski I would have liked a bit more length in deeper snow as they weren't the easiest skis to float.
Characteristics
The flex in the tips of the Foils is pretty soft compared to the rest of the ski, but I feel like they could be a bit softer in the tails. With the tails being quite stiff, it's a bit difficult to keep them from getting buried in a bit of fresh. I feel like my stance has to stay farther back on these skis in powder than on other skis. The tails stiffness really adds to the pop of the ski though as they do have quite a bit of pop. And the tails are very forgiving for landing backseat due to the stiffness. They had a pretty long break in period too. I only began to get more flex through the tails towards mid season.
Durability
These skis held up pretty good. I only used them for one season and I will be using them for about a month this upcoming season. The edges have cracked a bit but I never detuned them so that was expected. The bases were super soft on the Foils and I got a number of deep gashes and a few coreshots in them throughout the season. I got them P-Texed at the end of the season so they're all filled in now. I'm keeping my eyes on the edges as there are a few spots I've noticed where it looks like they're trying to start seperating. Other than the bases though they held up to what I expected.
