Welcome to Newschoolers.com, the Internet's busiest and fastest growing newschool skiing website! Read below for information about the site.
Why do I see the term NS all over? The term
NS is short for NewSchoolers.
Who runs this?Newschoolers was originally started by Matt Harvey. As it grew it became too big for one person to manage. Now NS is ran by a small group of skiiers from Montreal. You can get their contact information
here.
What is the list of names on the left?It is the Online List. Everybody who has logged into NS as a non-guest will have their name added to the Online List. When a user logs out, or hasn't used NS in a while, they will be logged out and taken off of the Online List.
Why are members names different colours? | Blue: | is a guy |
| Pink: | is a girl |
| Red: | is somebody who works for NS |
| Green: | is a moderator (Not all mods are green) |
What is the information I get if I click on a member's name? Each member of NS can have a profile. Clicking on their name shows you their profile. Guests can not view member profiles.
Member profiles give an idle time if that member is currently online. What does this number represent? When you login to newschoolers as a member your account is set to "online", meaning you are actively using your account at that time. An account is considered "online" until there has been no activity for 30 minutes upon which your are automatically logged out. Every page you load within Newschoolers will set your account's idle time to zero. Every minute that passes without a page load will add a minute to your idle time.
Example: When you login to Newschoolers your account is immediately set "online" with an idle time of zero minutes. You then click on the "Forums" link and make a post; your idle time is still zero. You then leave your computer for 5 minutes while you go get a drink. For every minute you do not load a page your idle time will increase by 1. When you return, your idle time will be at 5 minutes. You click on a link to another thread and your idle time is set back to zero. The idle time is very accurate however there is one case where it can be deceiving. Your web browser will automatically refresh after 20 minutes of inactivity. This is to keep your browser logged in to Newschoolers if you are away for an extended period of time. When your browser refreshes your idle time is set back to zero and others may think you are currently using Newschoolers.
What are the yellow stars beside members names? Why don't I have one?A yellow star like this '
*' is appended to a member's name if they have a profile.
What are the money signs beside member's names?A money sign is appended to a member's name if they have donated to Newschoolers. The higher the donation the more extreme the Bling! The order of bling is as follows:
| $ | = Some bling |
| $ | = More bling |
| $ | = Alot of bling |
| $$ | = Major bling |
 | = Ultimate bling |
You can donate to Newschoolers
here.
How do I instant message other members?First you must create an account on NS ;) Once you are logged in, load a profile of any other user by clicking their name. Following their profile is a form for messing that user. Instant Messaging only works if you have logged in as a non-guest.
What is a Cult?NS Members can create private restricted community inside Newschoolers.
Cults give cult members access to a private message board and other goodies. Any member can start a cult and invite other members. A cult is considered an
official cult if is has more than 10 members.
How do I get an icon in the forums?Click 'My NS' on the Navigation, then click 'Forum Icon'. Icons must be either a
gif, png or
jpg file and no larger than 50x50 pixels and 2K in size.
How do I set a signature?Click 'My NS' on the Navigation, then click 'Account Tools'.
How do members include links or images in their messages, comments and forum posts?
Currently there are a few different methods to include a link or an image in a comment, message or forum post. It is recommended that you learn the method described here since Newschoolers will one day use it exclusively.
Comments, forum posts and messages are stripped of all disallowed HTML tags upon submission. This means if your comment, message or forum posts contains an HTML tag that has ben disallowed it will be removed.
Disallowed tags include: img (image), a (link), font, table, meta, etc...
Including a link is now very easy. Simply type out the url for the link and it will be automatically made into a link! No more messing with the <a href.."> tags.
To display an image simply type out the address of the image between [IMG] and [/IMG] tags. As example:
[IMG]http://www.example.com/picture.jpg[/IMG]The above text will be replaced with the image. This will only work if:
- The image address is preceded by [IMG]
- The image address is followed by [/IMG] (with the /)
- There is no space between the IMG markers and the image address.
Why are there long pauses sometimes when I post images in forums or comments?Images posted in the forum or in comments are often wider than NS's content area. For this reason the server downloads any referenced images to find the image's dimensions. If the image fits within in the content area the image is displayed normally. If the image is too wide, the server scales down the image for display while keeping the aspect ratio. This ensures all images are displayed at an optimum size.
However, if you use
[IMG] tags to reference an image that doesn't exist, the server will stall while trying to download the broken image. The moral of the story is to be careful when referencing images. Broken images will stall your page load and just clutter the server with broken information.
Why are news stories sometimes not in cronological order on the news page?News articles can be ordered to give important news better exposure.
Why are thread subjects in the forums black and blue?Any thread that has been created or updated (replied to) since your last logout will be black. Threads which have had no activity since your last logout will be blue.
Always remember to log out!
Why are my posts being removed?Posts, comments, images and videos will be removed if the content is vulgar of offensive.
What is a 'flamer' and how do I avoid them? Some people that are totally un-shibby and just want to make trouble. These people are usually called flamers or trollers. They crawl message boards insulting others while offering no or very little creative input into conversations.
If you encounter someone making posts like this in any forum try and ignore them as your first reaction.
If they continue you can try and make some witty comment at their intellect or some other target, keep in mind that replies like 'you are stupid' and 'you suck' won't give any effect and are not very funny.
