CoreUPT Q&A

Last Monday CoreUPT gave the NS community the opportunity to ask anything they wanted about the company in a thread in ski gabber, and said that after reviewing the questions they would make a video with the answers. Over the course of the last week, hundreds upon hundreds of questions were asked about the most talked about new ski company of the year, and as a result the boys from CoreUPT were both stoked and overwhelmed. So much so that they couldn't answer all the questions in one video, so they made five parts. So without further ado, here is your chance to get to know a little bit more about CoreUPT, courtesy of the brainchild of the company, pro skier Guerlain Chicherit...

correct me if i am wrong...but atomic owns armada yes? far from core is you asked me...

and coreupt...are you, or are you not, owned by dynastar? or was the molds simply a contract type thing to get you started in the right direction?

As far as I know armada is just made in the atomic factory. Im not sure if they are actually owned by atomic. Either way... just being made by a bigger company or even being owned by a parent company does not make them by default not core. So long as their mission and ideals are still in line with what made them core in the first place and so long as they have the customer at heart... then you can still be very much core. Line is owned by K2 now and I would still consider them core. I would say that Armarada is still very much a core freestyle company.

a little off topic but my two cents

CoreUPT IS Dynastar this year! It is Dynastar skis with CoreUPT graphics on. They are not hiding that. It's normal that the bigger brands' factories produce skis for the smaller ones. Image if every single ski brand owned a own factory! I've heard Armada is produced by Elan.

The issue that people have...is not so much they are produced by Dynastar as they are the same skis as Dynastar.

he specifically said that they are the same dynastar molds, but NOT the same flex. each ski has its own unique flex, so i believe that they arent the EXACT skis as dynastar, simply same dimensions and molds to get them started. but next year they should have their own apparently....

Please consider that with not even had half a season of selling product under your belt, yet you’ve already had multiple news stories on NS followed by thread discussions which as you’ve stated never seem to answer people’s ongoing questions. You’ve now gone to the extent of taking up valuable home page NEWS space that most prefer to be used to supply the world of skiing with “NEWS”, not video answers to questions that should be easily answered by one visit to your website or simply watching your brand/business in action.

All in all, I personally as a skier, believe “the more the merrier”, but only when more means more of something new, and different that contributes to the good of the whole by providing something that doesn’t already exist. I think this statement summarizes the underlying cause for the feeling of the community still needing an answer.

So here’s the underlying question in it’s simplest form that I hope you can answer through your day to day actions and not endless news stories: WHAT MAKES COREUPT DIFFERENT?

Please keep in mind that we already know who makes your skis, who you pay to ride your products, you like skiing a lot, you think making a company like Armada

Please keep in mind that we already know who makes your skis, who you pay to ride your products, you like skiing a lot, you think making a company like armada or 4 front is a good idea, and you want each of your riders to design their own products just like other companies do.

OK, there it is. Didn't know what happened there for a minute and it cut off @ companies like Armada...
Thanks to both of you guys for putting that question out there again - what are you going to do different? What makes Coreupt any better than anything else out there?
-On the other hand, I do see the company may need to solidify itself in terms of perception and brand in order to make money to do something different. Not everyone is poised to do what you did J - you put in so much more with so much less. It's a risk I wouldn't take right now.

replica dildo. that is awesome. my question is, did you add a few inches to it?

To JLev and everyone else stating this question to so many others. Why is everyone so concerned that a new company has something different to offer? 4Frnt didn't. Armada didn't. None of those companies came out with any crazy designs for years. Hell, 4Frnt still hasnt (aside from the EHP but that ski doesn't appeal to most NSers).

All they had that was different was image. So maybe, for the first year, that is what Coreupt is doing. Then, just like others, next year (when they have their own molds), they will come out with new shapes (He already said a rockered ski is coming next year).

JLev, I understand if you have concern about too many brands, but the others (the customers!), you should be stoked for competition. Competition is better for prices, quality, and selection. Sure you could say that some brand, with a really cool image, and nice owners, will go under. Most likely, they were doing something wrong.

And to finish off, JLev, Line is my favourite brand out there because of your new ideas and ways of operations. You're doing everything right.

I'm probably one of the most cynical people on this website and I'm down with CoreUPT... My major reservation up until this point was that they were essentially re-branding Dynastars with a different flex pattern (which was obvious to anyone who bothered to look at them). I remember 4frnt getting the same kind of criticism when they released the deadbolt, AKA the VIST-with-a-new-paint-job binding. I'm pretty stoked to hear that this is just a stop-gap and that they actually will be producing rider designed skis next season, I'd be interested to see what Colby and TJ come up with. I can definitely wait a year. I am a little skeptical that a 5000 ski run is going to come close to selling out... Dynastar themselves will probably not sell many more than that. I don't know what your strategy is there. All in all though, I'm happy to see another big player controlled by skiers like Guerlain. And please do bring back the old axials or FKS.

Awesome to see J chiming in with his thoughts. Nothing but love for Line on NS.

Brian: probably more like pushing top 5... Scott and On3p's thing is a different kind of company, it's centered here rather than in Europe and is more of a grassroots company. Personally I'm going to be riding On3ps this year and in the future. But I'm open to other companies breaking into the market, and from talking to Scott I know he is too. There's a market for both perspectives.

i think they would do better if they just marketed towards europeans to start. obviously the guy has the accent going for him, and he's got candide. they should have just made a really sick team of sick upcoming euros and that would set them apart as far as "image" goes. Eventually it would catch on in america because we always get the watered down version of europen cool.

I cant believe the negative reaction to CoreUPT. I can understand not being interested in buying their skis, but at this point I see them doing everything right. They are getting a ton of attention and reacting and being mindful of public opinion. Everything is for their brand to some extent, but this was hardly some promotional stunt. These are videos of skiers you are watching, not some PR jock. As for all of the hate on them not being core because they are backed by big investors, you guys are fucking morons. Do you really think its possible to be so core that you the skiers could pay to start up their own successful international brand? If they did it would take years upon years and instead look how they have leapfrogged in front of so many other brands in publicity. Sure there is the thought that these investors might push the brand in a non "core" direction, but they realize the allure of their brand. They want you to know exactly what is going on and who is making your ski. It sounds stupid now since they are pretty much just modifying dynastars, but unless your mind is made out of a brick wall its fairly apparent they will be doing their own thing next year. With only 13 employees we can hardly expect them to design there full line up, especially considering how much time they put into building the brand and the team. Essentially they had the choice to create a brand and get their name out there for the new season with a proven, although not unique product, or sacrifice publicity in order to design their own molds. Business wise, and considering their assets, I really dont think the latter would make sense.

^you can only cut the line if you have something better than the first guy. I think it's weird to not have a natural progression of a brand, build innovative product first and you're business will grow, don't just force it down the throats of everyone because all the cool kids are paid to ride it now. dang euros

Thank you guys for the feed back ! Following the ongoing question of our difference (which, it's true, we didn't answered as well as we should have), what we make are skis, and we can't pretend to be very different from any other ski brand. As hemlockjibber8 pointed out, everyone in this area has its own specificities, but they've been build by the story of the brand, and the personnality of those who are part of this story. We don't want to claim that we are different, we're not far from Armada, Line or 4frnt, we do the skis we like to ski, we (try to) live the life we dreamed of, and after all, it's your choice at the end that will make this story last (we hope).

My question is why not mold your own skis in the first place? All i have to do to make your skis is take a pair of crappy dynastars paint them and park my car on them for a week. BAM new flex and graphics!

wow, some people are sayin a lot of shit, claiming that it's "the truth"... hehe

Of course coreUPT has cash from somewhere, and it's likely that these bills are being paid by Quiksilver, since they own half the ski and snowboard-world anyway, and def has a lot of connections to the once involved.

Yes the coreUPT skis are dead on the same as Dynastar by size and shape, might be different flex though, who knows.

When it comes to "bringing new stuff to the scene" 4frnt and Armada actually did. Even though their skis mainly had familiar shapes, their flex-patterns were different. Yes, Elan made Armada skis, but that was a few years ago, but where skis are made are more a matter of cost - quality and expertise, cause u don’t have to use the existing molds that the manufacturer has in stock, even though that is way cheaper.

coreUPT might be a new instrument for Quiksilver to earn money, but as long as they put money into our sport, pay wages to good inspiring athletes and make things happen, bringing life to the NS forum for instance, then I say "welcome"!

If they also start to make new interesting skis for their kick-ass team, that's a bonus!
