Inline at Mammoth

Just because rollerblading is in its dark ages, it shouldn't mean we have to ski in it.
From left to right: Franky Morales, Brian Shima, Chris Haffey, and JF Cusson

Words and photos by Jeff King

Chris Haffey, Brian Shima, and Franky Morales are naturally talented athletes who just happen to be learning to ski. They also happen to be three of the best inline skaters ever. Sunice sent JF Cusson to oversee the project, and for three days at Mammoth Mountain they skied and had a good time, you can't hate on that...but scroll to the bottom and start flaming if you so desire. Otherwise read on and be enlightened.

Skiing and inline skating (or rollerblading, whichever you prefer) have actually had a longer standing relationship than newschool skiing itself has existed. If you were alive in the early '90s, cross-training on line skates was fairly common for skiers, and if you still read SKI magazine, it could still be today. There are two vastly different sides to rollerblading: the purely recreational side with its fashion blades, and aggressive street skating. Most of inline street skating's image issues could be blamed on the generic commercial success of its other side. Being highly accessible sounds great, but anything associated with soccer moms and one-footed slalom is so at odds with a "core" lifestyle, it's hard to exist separately, let alone be distinctively unique. Newschool skiing doesn't have to worry so much about these issues—skiing is still skiing to anyone else, and stretch pants were never that warm anyway. Still, street skating goes on regardless of being dropped from the X-games, losing sponsors, and contests disappearing. Remember when the X-games had inline downhill, you probably remember street luge, so let's not measure a sports relevance by its acceptance in a made for TV spectacle put on by Disney.

Today in 2007, think about skiing 12 years ago, then imagine it eight years from now. Consider what would happen if in eight hypothetical years, skiing went into decline again, like a tech bubble bursting. All the haters who said skiing was lame when the park was dominated by snowboarders, are saying, "See, I told you so." Would you stop skiing, or even pretend you never did it at all? That's the path aggressive inline skating has taken the last 20 years. If skiing never quite eclipses snowboarding, you might see something like this happen... not saying it's probably, but it's possible. Meteoric rises are usually followed by a steep descent, after all. You could say that newschool skiing is just now taking off after fueling up the last 10 years. Sponsor dollars and the pure number of pro-level events make easy indicators. Ski superpipe went from a non-event to the headline event live on ESPN in only four years, with that event alone probably the reason for Simon Dumont's major sponsorship with Target. Thankfully, newschool skiing has the huge benefit of a well-established, centuries-old lifestyle image to lean on for support. In contrast, nobody's parents ever taught them to skateboard or rollerblade.

The secret to staying warm is of course layering.

Tricks and technique aside, inline skating and skiing don’t share a whole lot if you disregard the manufacturers who make both skis and inline skates. K2 was at one time a huge player making park skates, but what hasn’t K2 made over the years? Until now the two sports have never shared a high-level athlete (I’m not sure Nicky Adams counts). Kaya Turski (NSRadio interview) is the new shining example of someone taking her inline experience and translating it so directly into ski success. Back in the day, the three Phills all skated inline park together as well. There have always been skiers who have skateboarded too, and if skateboarding can make you ski like Candide Thovex then maybe he knows something we don't. I'm not suggesting that skiers should be rollerblading to become better skiers, that is not the intent of this article. A little bit of variety is good for everyone and drawing influences from outside of skiing can't be a bad thing (snowboarding has been sucked dry). Nothing exists in a bubble anymore; the free exchange of ideas, the internet, all that good stuff. Hopefully all three of the skaters in this story have taken something away from their skiing experience to change the way they look at street skating as well.

So if Kaya can do it, why not a male professional? Kaya maybe has the advantage being French Canadian (I haven't quite figured that one out yet), but there’s no logical reason why three of the best male inliners couldn’t pull it off. This is where Chris Haffey, Brian Shima, and Franky Morales come in. However, all three take up residence well towards the Southern Hemisphere, with more sunshine in a year than most Scandinavians have seen in a lifetime.

Franky calmly cruised off his first chair off load ever... disappointing everyone who's ever seen a Warren Miller movie.

LP and JF are keeping a watch-full eye on Franky's $70 binding mount.

Franky Morales’s first day skiing was normal enough: fell down a few times, learned how to turn, side slip, stop, jump, and tried a rail. Come day two, he was pretty much on his own, hitting the three jump lines and just generally flying around faster than I thought safe for someone who had never been on snow before yesterday. Haffey and Shima had a few days head start over at Bear Mountain before coming to Mammoth, which at times left Franky pushing hard to try and keep up. But in the Unbound south park on the three-jump line at the end of his second day skiing, Franky Morales attempted and landed his first 360.

Franky version 2.0 on his second day on skis

JF looks on as Brian Shima cross trains for rollerblading

Brian Shima and Chris Haffey got in a few days at Bear Mountain in the weeks leading up to their trip to Mammoth. That head start served them well in getting their skis under control and gaining the little confidence they were lacking to take a few leaps in the park. To say that everyone learned fast would be misleading, because either I didn't know what fast learning was or I'm just lacking a lot of talent. Regardless, witnessing such constant progression over such a short period was more inspiring than demoralizing. The fact that nobody fell hard or even at all, was for a while... sorta scary. Ideas were being thrown around that just didn’t sound right—thankfully , Chris Haffey did not hit the huge bottom kicker in the main park. Then at times, things progressed out of nowhere fast, like when Shima and Haffey started one-upping each other with 180s in the mini park. Or when rails became too easy just to slide, we have to start spinning off now. A couple 270 attempts may not have been successful, but it was only day two, after all. Shima did clean a one-footed grind at the end of the day in true rollerblading fashion on a flat down rail. I guess it was to be expected then that the guys could handle rails no problem—after all, they're used to much burlier rails high over flat concrete.

Brian Shima de-tunes his skis early on day 1

Chris Haffey follows suit

Lesson #2, a down kink on day 2. Lesson #3 switch on, back side 360 change up, date tbd.

So with the rail progress on the back burner, day three on snow brought about a more focused jump approach. Day one and two had plenty of 180s and a few warm up 3s. JF Cusson was along the first two days giving pointers and the ground work was well underway to then progress into the main park with some larger jumps.

On our last day, after just a few jumps Franky unfortunately had to take a seat due to a pre-existing hand injury. That left Brian Shima and Chris Haffey to try and match each other hit for hit on the two top jumps in Mammoth's main park. Until now they had proven themselves fast learners, or at least that years of doing extremely gnarly things on rollerblades is decent preparation for instantly grasping the basics of park skiing overnight. All thre guys were in agreement that the only thing worrying them while jumping was speed, it just wasn’t quite instinctual yet on skis. The high winds and frigid temperatures didn’t make for a comfortable learning environment either.

Chris Haffey launches a lofty 180 under calmer winds on day 3

Franky goes large in a large setting. Speaking of setting, a broken bone in his right hand which doctors said should keep him from skating for a while, finally forced an end to his ski trip not long after this shot.

Shima warms up with a 360 lui-kang

The guys warmed up with 180s and 360s before attempting their first ever 540s on skis. The jump was a reasonable size for trying new things, with about 15 feet of deck to clear and a good long landing to go bigger if needed. Brian Shima employed his now signature Lui-Kang style on some smooth 360s and was the first to throw a 540. From that point on Chris and Brian tossed a series of 5s, usually airing the second larger table and lapping the park as quickly as possible.

for Chris Haffey, learning to land backwards was best done with more air time to think about it.

360, check.

540, why spin faster when you can just go bigger.

Time was now running out on the experiment, and the only thing left to do was switch tricks. Bigger spins and a variety of grabs will come with time and experience. Yet the hypothesis for now is proven by the existence of some real potential. Brian and Chris had done all these tricks before, not necessarily on a smaller scale but certainly in a more familiar setting. Skate ramps are to tables as urethane wheels to wax and snow, and the instincts that kick in while traveling through the air didn’t need any translation. So when the first switch 3 was done on the first attempt by Chris Haffey, I think I was over being surprised. Or when Chris went for the first switch 5, losing a ski on takeoff, finishing the rotation and landing on one ski wasn’t out of the ordinary. Stomping the second attempt, then, was obviously logical.

The only important question in the end was, can three people who have never skied before become addicted like us? So while you're reading this article on a website designed for feeding and spreading the addiction, you can hopefully identify with genuine excitement and newfound passion. We all know you're never to old to learn something new... sometimes you just have to find out if you're willing.

Brian Shima is more than willing to do a 360

If you're ever around Bear Mountain on a weekday, look for Franky Morales, Brian Shima, and Chris Haffey having a lot of fun and probably trying not to freeze their asses off... they’re beta testing to see if wearing all black might just help.

oooh shit thats sick, james might be right though i know someone who used to be a fruitbooter and all he does is huge spins onto rails and off jumps with no style but maybe theyre different, that 360 actually looks really nice for their second day skiing
That's so awesome.
I think anyone who dawgs this article is just in plain words pissed they did so well on first time skiing!
Yeah! Barely Dead movie is super sick! This is sick!

impressed..... fuck man they learned so quickly.. imagine if they´d do a whole season
they are almost better at park then me after 3 days and i have been skiing for 18 years. Thats awsome.
there the future i bet
In Poland we've got Marek Doniec who is one of the Europe's best inline skaters and he turned into skiing 3 years ago and is one of our top riders, this ain't new thing to see rollerbladers skiing and beeing good. Props to those three for trying sth new :D
wow, learning 540s on your third day ever skiing... WOW
holy shit ive rollerbladed and followed these guys for YEARS i cannot believe my eyes.... they did amazingly well and that 3 was stylish!! grinds looked solid as well...these guys r legends and its great to see rollerbladers picking up skiing like myself... especially pros!!!
i'm not an inline fan, but thats sick
oh an, i'm soooo stokked on this article, what an awesome idea. like i am sooo happy with the results, its just amazing. i'm gonna go learn tricks this weekend.

I'm impressed for their first time on skis. Nice job. and I want pics of JF throwin down
wow, thats sick as fuck, i cant believe they hit jumps and rails already lol
that is sooo sick

i used to rollerblade alot more than i skied and it is really cool to see some of my favorite pros in skating strap some skis on
thats way sick. mad props
great story but it needs more dinosaurs
damn that's a nice ol kang!
That was fucking sick.

And to the one prick saying they have no style...thats their first three days ever on skis and I'm willing to bet you cant even do what they were doing.

thats awesome haha people who never ski come out for a few days and start owning half the haters on this site
that blue suit is ballin, they're better than most kids here after 1 day. shows what doing other sports can do for your game.

awesome article
i spy a kang
that is just so sick!
After rollerblading for over 8 years, I am so stoked to see some of the people I've looked up to try skiing. I hope to run into them at Bear!
where did they get the idea for this article? Being a rollerblader myself I really liked it.
that was a genious idea, greAt ARTICLE
thats sick how they progressed so quickly
wow sick talent!
I love this skiing fusing with inline
i'm really really stoked on what those three did in the air, it's actually amazing that they learned a few tricks and even put style into them in a matter of days.
rails however, different story. i assumed because they are at the top of their sport, they'd realize how important clean style is and strive for it with every trick. but there's arms everywhere. perhaps that's the hot style in inline?
that's pretty sick! learning that fast!
NICE
damn thats so sick, i really wanna see some video now. cant wait to see what they are like in a month
haha, cusson just lurking in every shot, overlooking the situation.
BK
kaya turski (sp?) was getting really good at booting when she switched over to skiing.
finalllllllyyyy
thats sick
What a great Article. Good job boyz... Where's Nicky Adams at Yo?
Shima is the sickest on skates...I imagine he would be pro level at skiing within less than a year if he decided to ski.
that's for sure one of the better articles I've read on here. Not that the others were bad. good work.
would be good to see them ski after a whole season at mammoth, i think they would proll y rip!!
sickkkk

i think i might try rollerblading
Franky Morales is also a rapper and is in EBK (Everybody Killer)
to all the skiers that think rollerblading is a crock of shit is WAY WRONG. like the article said, its some of the best cross training for skiing. really helps you develop your pop and have way better balance. and dont worry about these guys style, it was only their first few days on skis. i wanna see you do a stylish 3 or 5 on your first days of learning park. shima, morales, and haffey are THE top guys in rollerblading handsdown, especially Shima!
sweet man
if Franky starts to ski everyone is going to be blown away with his style. it will be unmatched
FRANKY MORALES IS THE FUCKIN SHIT....HE HAS THE MOST GANGSTA STEEZ ON FRUITBOOTS...ITS GONNA BE INSANE WATCHING HIM PICK UP SKIING...STRAIT UP THUG
really quality article, it is really inspring.
dude franky could shit on tanners ghetto steez if he continued skiing... actually rep the hood in skiing

Newschoolers just got shown up

And I wanna see Mr. Murda on some skis
Thats soooooo sick!@
that would be such an awesome documentary
thats rather tight shit.
They suck so bad, on my first day skiing i did a double backflip first try.

Thats amazing. Those guys are very talented.
Heres another skater who would be sick with a pair of skis:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCQvVTGng28
Amazing article, thanks newschoolers!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NO FUCKIN WAY!!!!!!!!!!! thats fuckin sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FUCK YEAH !!!!! SOOO FUCKIN STOKED!! pretty much franky IS my favortie rollerblader EVER!! thats sooo fuckin ill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!STOKER
great story. i can't wait for these three, and possibly some of the other rolling elite, to enter and dominate some ski comps and finally force skiers to realize that A. rollerblading is amazing and B. is your closest relative.

your days of jocking skateboarding and snowboarding and denying inline's obvious influence on and parallel progression to skiing are limited, haters. better get all the hate out while you can, because i bet in three or four years you're all going to be secretly sneaking looks at One and Be-mag magazines and our videos, trying to figure out who's going to be the next big thing in skiing.

it's funny that some of you slag on their style when these three have some of the most distinctive and fluid styles in skating, and i and any other rollerblader can immediately see in these photos that's it's translated into skiing. that shot of Shima's liu kang? classic shima. haffey's safety 360 sequence? textbook haffey. funny how you guys think his style is lame when he's actually JUMPING, off his edges, and tucking and grabbing perfectly. and all within what was probably his tenth time skiing.

99% of the launches i see from your (and snowboarding's) pros are so sloppy, just riding off the launch, and starting your spin on the ground, and then landing short of the full rotation and just sliding it around on the landing. you see, on CEMENT, with WHEELS, we have to JUMP and LAND CORRECTLY because there's no safety net of sliding your edges around on landing. and for those of you who'll say that that's just outweighed by how big skiers go, that's true to a point but you should see the gaps these three do on a regular basis... over cement.

open your eyes and realize that skiing has a lot to learn from rollerblading. just because skateboarding is threatened by us and spends so much time hating on us doesn't mean shit.
yeee boyz, fuckin good too see the cross over! how can shima still walk let alone ski!
if inliners could hit the mega ramp youd see some serious cross over too... drop into that ramp switch on rollerblades, insane!
ya ya chris haffey is the shit, big ups to the juggernaut!!!
Easily the best article I've ever read on NS. Good, good stuff. I'm a little freaked out by it too.
soooooooooo siiiiickkkkkkkkkk
wow, crazy fast progression
shima's wonderful
rollerbladers are always out to prove something, like aldolega for example. i thought this was a good article except for the begining. those guys seem sick
"hey, it's their first time on skis, what a surprise thier style isn't great."
hey, im an asshole, and i really like making rolerbladers feel gay... because they are
Thats crazy that in three days they can be doing that!
damn theyre better than me
rollerbladers aren't out to prove anything, we're just constantly forced to stand up for ourselves.
dude this is like the greatest thing to happen since candides cork 810
I talked to Chris last week and the guys (Haffey, Shima) got a week day ski pass at Bear Mountain. They're already doing fakie 720 and will be skiing there all season. Go say hi if you see them.

I'll try to get a video update later on...
they are gonna come up with so many more creative things
dope
Any old Daily Bread readers out there? DB mag was the shit. This stuff takes me back. I remember when Shima 2's were the blades to have.
thats crazy...talk about progression after 1 week.

And i heart that sunice suit so much..
daily bread...wow...that was when i even skated.

love shimas liu kang. mike nick styles

I llllllove it. These guys are better then me in 3 days, damn.
yea yea
so sick I'm so pumped on this
LJ$
thats fucking awesome., skiing rocks
ROLLERBLADERS ARE USE TO CONCRETE WE GO TO SNOW AND ITS A JOKE
remember at the global x games there was that japanese guy, not shoya? Wasn't he a pro rollerblader?
WHAT CLOTHES GOT JF?? ANSWER PLEAS AND A LINK WOULD BE GREAT:D..
truthfully i dont see how any of you can even try to criticize these guys. their progression for the amount of time they had been skiing is undeniable and as for the style issue, theyre inline skaters, not skiiers. appreciate for what it is, i can promise that any of you who never skated before would still be makin an ass of yourself after just 3 days on em.
This article may have just ruined skiing. Why not just let these guys ski, without having to explain thier heavy rollerblade background??? Let them get good and kill it, but be skiiers. Not rollerbladers turned skiiers or vis versa. Skiing is its own thing. Let rollerblading be its own too. Skiing has been around for much longer, poles have been in the game, and taking park skiing tricks outside the park is the next level. Not turning rollerbladers into skiiers. Sorry kid. Bullshit article. Nothing against those guys or your writing, but keep skiing what it is and keep rollerblading out of it. Cross train if you want, but SKI, dont rollerski.
719
I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^ shut up dickead
eat a dick, fuck face^^^^
719
amazing article
719 why does it matter wether they are cross over athletes or not just let them be this is sick and im surprised it hasnt been more prevelent already rollerblading is great and im surprised how much its died
WHAT CLOTHES GOT JF?? ANSWER PLEAS AND A LINK WOULD BE GREAT:D.

Sunice theres some articles on here about them
im starting to rollerblade
no question
Aahlnas,

Check out the Sunice Team page on this site...
wow one of the best front page articles ever
719, the writer did not say that rollerblading makes you a better skier, the article simply highlights one situation where rollerbladers took their skills and translated it into their own skiing. Its not a threat to skiing or skiers, perhaps youd like to teach them how to really ski, your way. until then im sure theyre happy to simply "cross over" for a little while.
wow theres a lot of comments
this is the best one keep this updated i hope they get really good that would be sick
that is fucking insane, 540's on your third day, im 20 been skiing for 15 years almost entirely bc) and only had the balls to try 5's last year, are they making this into tv or just an experiment, imagine what they could achieve in a month.
i can see that rails are pretty normall for them, but do they do 5's and 7's off ramps in skating?
Anyway that article was one of the best that i have read on ns, cheers guys
fuck yeah! i was so juiced when i first heard about this. great article. the experiment....A SUCCESS!!
yeaaaaah fruit booters! :) so stoked
^ yo me too, ive been fruit booting for years, also peepin shima, frankie, and haffey. its sick how well they did for their first time, sure they look a lil gaped out, but in my opinion its only cause of their apparel, you can only look so cool wearing a fleece "dreads" hat. either way, theyr pretty steezy, its funny seeing the rollerblade style interperated into skiing, like skima and haffey royale-ing instead of just a flat rail slide. sick work :)
Wow makes me feel like shit!!!
I dont me to disrespect. Its just my opinion you know? The fact is that I just feel that rollerblading is related to skiing too much in the industry. There are some slight similarities. like the fact of being squared forward and two feet on rails. Other then that, its skiing. If it were to be like roller blading then get snowblades and no poles should do airials. But skiiers should ski!
719
hahaha goodtimes. wish I was there....
oh yeah and ash.. remember when I got frankys autograph for you??? hahah
719:

haha you must be blind to not see how closely related freestyle skiing and freestyle rollerblading are related. lets see..... launching off ramps, spinning/flipping/etc, doing grabs...... both feet are independent of each other and you ride straight forward or backward...... sliding down rails in a frontside, backside, fastslide or pudslide... riding, launching, and landing fakie (aka "switch", which makes zero sense to me)....

yea, toootally unrelated. face it, you're doing rollerblading tricks on snow. short of daffys and gay shit like that, when did freestyle/newschool skiing start? mid to late nineties?

lpswitch05:

rollerbladers do a lot more than 5's and 7's off ramps. i've seen pro skater brian aragon (another amazing rollerblader i'd like to see try skiing as he's a spinning machine) 900 to fakie 1080 on two back-to-back launches... that's a 900, land fakie, roll about fifteen feet, huck a fakie 1080 on the second launch. 540's over gaps (street gaps, that is- cement and usually flat landings) are pretty standard for good skaters and 7's, fakie 7's, and even 9's are fairly common. not to mention that we also spin into (landing on small- 1.5 inches or smaller- areas of our skates onto the rail or ledge) and out of grinds (facing various directions and with our feet locked on the rail in various positions), with 360 and 450 spins in commonplace, 540's in being fairly elite, and even a few people, like Chris Haffey, spinning 720's into grinds- off of flat ground! jumping! and as for spinning out of grinds, i've seen more than a few 9's in person and steezed 5's and 7's are pretty common. also, a lot of these tricks are rewinded- spin in one way, stop your rotary momentum, spin out the other way.

oh, and franky isn't wearing one of those dreads hats... he just has actual dreads.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=SdKricfLJr8

haffey, two or three? years ago, barn burner comp, seattle washington, launch to outspin 720 kindgrind. kind of a tap but remember that this was the first fakie 720 into a grind, and that he's locking on a part of his skate that's about 1.5 inches wide.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ChVty5vTzqo (go to about :45)

haffey again, the next year, same trick, not disaster, not off a launch, jumping off flat. i'm trying to find a better angle.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Xqz858c8LnE

haffey again: truespin (blind 180) soul to inspin 360 (fakie blind 360) miszou to 720 revert (fakie 7 out). here he's working with about twelve feet of runup, you cannot see your support foot on either grind, which makes them really hard, that rail is about waist high where he locks on, and that's about a ten foot drop off the end. he stumbles on the landing because that park's floor sucks.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=RDNq5SD8Zl4

Haffey's section in Leading the Blind, came out about two years ago. watch the whole section or if you're impatient just watch the last trick (at about 4:00), fakie 720 down El Toro, which is about 22 stairs i believe.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=gARXSnpls8U

a friend of mine, Don Bambrick. safety 180 on a 12 flat 13, simply massive.
ye i knew that this would happen
yes yes yes that was a fucking good idea to do this article !! They are three of the bests rollerbladers in the world, check out some videos of them, i'm sure you'll like it !
I'm very happy that you realize there's a link between this two sports.
Great article. And I'm not a huge fan of inline (although have nothing against it either)

However, I'd like to know how are those guys as "pure skiers"? Why didn't you take them to the all-mountain: pow, crud, steeps, moguls, fast cruisers etc.? Tricks are tricks but skiing is skiing...I mean it's pretty obvious the two sports are pretty same in the air/park. What makes skiers skiers is the ability to master the planks in every condition possible. Tricks are just a layering of the cake IMHO.
ahaha that franky morales photo reminds me of johnny tsunami SO much
PS. those guys have amazing balance. I don't doubt they would learn to ski anything pretty fast...
haha, skatebarn, i always liked rain city better, too bad i think both are closed now.
Freeskier should buy up this article. It would make a sick multi-part feature article
thats a great article...nice to see the merger of the sports
ya sic article
no style but style don't really matter, nice skiing
the thought of rollerblading being in the dark ages scares me with skiing. Are we so different? I think so, but it lingers in the back of my mind.
i think it is just rely cool that they tried skiing and did well right on for them. the more people skiing the better the world will be
what a crazy story. not so much crazy about the rollerbladers, more about JF Cusson doing something.
those 3 guys got better in 3 days than probably 70% of you fuckers
inline is f**** sick
To be a pro skier you have to be good, but to be a pro inline skater you have to be crazy good. Those guys have been doing things for years that are only now coming to skiing. Rails are in the natural rollerblading environment and those guys know what they are doing on them. This is awesome. I hope they continue and kick all the inline haters' asses.
thats sick/amazing/wow they're doing stuff i can't even do yet and i've been skiing for 4 years!

haffey's 3 is sweet.
morales is so good, i got his skates too.
hes got the sickest style of any street skater
also he looks like predator in those pictures
bummer.
hey man...that's pretty cool, I guess it just makes sence
Haffey, Shima, and Franky are 3 of the badest ass skaters to ever hit the scene. i'm stoked they are trying skiing. if they stuck with it they would be at the top in a year or two. the grindes that they would lay down would be out of control.
i call bull shit on switch on blind 360 change up.
hahaha just goes to show how gay park skiing is.
yeah park skiing is beat. east coasters we know why but west coast kids get out and find the natural shit! one
yeah park skiing is beat. east coasters we know why but west coast kids get out and find the natural shit! one
They have more style than I do, or any of my students... and they are better than I am. Damn i feel like shit right now.. haha...
great article. nice job.
ahhhhh that's blowing my mind! Those three totally bring shame to my "progression"
that's sick
those guys are amazing and pretty much made shame of EVERYONES progression on here. Rollerblade or not - that sport takes serious skills....just like table tennis, or any other sport you might think is gay. Think about it. Those guys had serious balls to step up and try something new and be prepared to go from total hero's in one action sport, to zero's in another....it takes balls to be able to take that lesson in humility....but they did it - and killed it.
someone please tell me what was un-stylish about that sequence shot of the 3 and 5, they got a safety grab and didnt spin penciled out... they understand the importance of grabbing and I doubt it will take long to grab nose and tail and be comfy with it... who wasn't unbalanced their first time on a rail and flailed their arms a bit? oh you were sliding rails out of the womb?
sooo impressive. there blading edits on the youtube links were also ridiculo. i wish anyone could hit urban like that on skis
I wanna see Tak Yasutoko ski pipe and do dub flats on skis
wow! thats pretty much sick for second day, if i learned that fast id be so pumped!
rollerblading might make you a better skier but then again kissing boys would make you a better kisser.... freeze rip
719, aerialists do not use snowblades, they use skis, don't hate on someone else's style cuz it may be better than yours
:D
i have been riding fs ski for 1 year and my best trick is 360.
but i have shit mountain.. :D
but these dudes rock!
"snowboarding has been sucked dry"
I disagree.
Me.
ummm, yeah that was a dope story and all but, what suit is JF wearing? it is neat.
lets face it, if all pro inliners started skiing, most of the pro skiers nowadays would be whiped out. at this rate, shima will be smoking t hall in a matter of months.
719 go jump off a cliff. this was their first time on skis. lemme see you go and do that
imagine dustin latimer on skis.
i really hate comparing skiing and gooshoeing.. skiing has been around way the fuck longer then rollerblades or rollerskates for that matter. but props on learning to ski that makes them not gay anymore
Um, how is this article related to anything that I care about? My mom started skiing two weeks ago. NS, put that on the front page, yo!

I personally couldn't care less what these guys can do on skis. WOW, if they can 5 now, they'll be up to a switch 1440 in two weeks. Wow. Somebody buy these guys a cookie.
Thats soo dope, everyone who is a sick rollerblader should put on a pair of skis and see what happens!
izz all good-
hahaha a guy tries first two days of skiing and he is better then 3/4s of the women who ride for money/product. womens skiing is a joke unless every girl is at the ability of kaya.
man how gay, powder day and there htting up the parks

FAGS
go ski some pow and maybe drop some cliffs then talk to me about skiing.
so fucking gay! worst thing i have ever seen and who cares about rollerblading anyways
It really amazes me why or how anyone would want to talk down this article and propagate Hate!
It seems they are having a good time and if more people are skiing and skating the better it is for us all !!!
Right ?
I hope all the haters on either side can see that it is all about having something to believe in
What do you believe in????
shit son EBK is dope........ and these guys need to trade their skates for skis..... fuck frootbooting
good article too
IN YOUR FACE ROLLERBLADE HATERS!! Finally someone showes the god damn connecting between rollerblading and skiing
I now officially suck at skiing. It took me 9 years to learn to 5.
ive been rollerbladin for like a year now, and i just started skiing park, it helps you out alot. Theres no fear because its not concerte, theres just snow. my frist day i was doin boxs, rails, madd jumps,it makes it alot easier to get on rails and staying on. spinning and ridin switch it alot easier, it was like normal.....its so fuckin sick how those guys tried skiing
fuckin dope... my heroes of rollerblading are riding on snow! never thought i'd see the day... haha
ahhh yeeahhh. i never thought i'd see the day franky put on skis, let alone shima and haffey. This is awesome.
i wanna hear updates on these guys...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INx2vG4Qhxg

omg i wear frankies skates lol
