Link is broken... I googled this though and I find it fairly interesting. I'm surprised it isnt bigger news on here?

From my understanding they are saying that rossignol is biting their elf shoe tech... interesting to see if it holds up in court. My guess is that it wont.

This is a grade a douchebag move by Armada. Their ARG was a straight up copy of DPS' Lotus 138. And that is the exact reason I bought it at the time. Shane is the only one who could have any sort of patent on this technology, hell JP mentioned in the ARG's original description on their website how without Shane's ideas, the ski would have never came to fruition!

Fuck Armada.

That argument won't go far in the legal world. DPS (I assume) didn't have the technology patented. Maybe Armada copying their design was unethical, but legally they were in the clear. However, Armada has already demonstrated that in this instance the technology is 'theirs' and that is why they were given the patent in the first place. If Rossignol's technology is shown to be especially similar to Armada's Armada is legally in the right. And as much as I hate to see this happening in the ski industry, I can understand why they would feel the need to protect their claims. It is something they put their time and money into developing.

Armada has sent cease and desist letters to a number of small and large ski companies claiming their models infringe upon Armada's patented geometry. One of those companies is Rossignol.

who else?

hasnt the ski community shown thats it not ok to take legal action against another company..

Scott has lost all credibility for going after on3p, take a leaf armada...

as I understand it, it will involve anyone else that wants to use camber under foot and early rise in the tip and tail- pretty much every company in the entire ski industry.

After reading that whole thing, Armada is basically fucked. It seems Rossi had already pattented their "Elf Shoe Technology" Back in 2006. Armada has a pattent on what is essentially the same technology but didn't recieve the pattent until 2010. They're gonna lose this one fair and square. Grab your JJ's while you can because I'm predicting they get pulled from production.

Are you stupid? Do you realize what kind of precedence that would set in the ski industry? Patenting a range of shapes hurts the consumer, and makes the industry stale. And this can only end up bad for Armada. Just like the whole Scott deal. They have the most sack ridden pro in the industry on their ski's. Yet the only place I ever see them is on Tramdock, and I sure as hell don't see them on the hill.

DPS had a number of patents in place before Armada released the ARG or the JJ. A 5 dimensional ski is not something they invented. This is absolute bullshit and could set a horrible precedent for the ski industry. Rossignol has lawyered-up and already counter-sued them and they surely have deeper pockets to see this one through.

doubt that, rossignol is struggling right now. Read the article in powder magazine this month.

And I guess the issue here isn't so much the camber underfoot/ rocker tip and tail combo, its the technology where the tip taper starts at the same place that the rocker does.

I am very interested to see how this whole debacle turns out

anyone who doesn't like rossi probably doesn't think they're core enough. ski companies suing other ski companies is dumb. Plus there's tons of skis with similar shapes.

This should be in Ski Gabber, be stickied, and everyone who cares about the ski industry should write an email to Armada to tell them to back the fuck off. This could snowball into a big fucking disaster where everyone has to lawyer-up to defend their product. Many companies (indies especially) would have to close their doors if they ever had to defend themselves against Amer Sports (Atomic, Salomon) or K2 Inc. or any other of the majors as the legal fees would bleed them dry, even if they had done nothing wrong. This is absolutely disgusting. I will never purchase another Armada product again.

It doesn't make sense that having both camber and rocker is even patentable. I mean both technologies existed separately and frankly it really isn't that innovative to combine both. Rossignol was having some financial trouble, so if this is Armadas attempt to sweep them under the table that blows.

If a mod wants to move this to Ski Gabber I'm all for it. Thought it might be more of a gear related issue but it needs to get out there.

This could set some really shitty precedents in the ski industry. Imagine if Elan were the only company out there allowed to make skis with sidecut, if Line were the only ones making twin tips, or if K2, Volant (although I dont think they own any patents) or even DPS for that matter were the only company out there making rockered skis. Those are extreme examples but if Armada set a precedent concerning ski patents here it could mean the end of most small companies as we know them as well as any competition between larger brands.

I cant even believe I'm writing this about a company I once considered as one of the most innovative and respectable ski brands out there. I think McConkey would be pretty unimpressed right about now.

My bad. I'd always assumed that Armada had taken the designs from DPS before DPS had patented them.

Does anyone know the details of Armada's patent? Because I assume it would have to be pretty specific with regards to how the ski is constructed etc. But if it really is just pretty much any ski with camber + early rise that is ridiculous. I can't see them winning that (though I don't really see how they could get a patent for something that vague in the first place).

rumor has it that some/if not all the money they make off this is going to charitable organizations

and if you actual read the armada patent application, you would be suprised how detailed they were with the exact dimensions, the percentage of sidecut, where the rocker begins to bend, etc.
