Yeah, site looks good.

I am usually really against design contests because I think they are a lame excuse for a lack of creativity on a company's part, but this one seems actually legit given the amount of stuff you win. I just remember Rossi doing one and totally fucking all the kids who won. They basically got free designs out of it.

Overall though, they always come off as pathetic to me. This one looks decent though.

Either way this is one of the better pro websites I have seen.

If you win, you will get credit for the design, and you will be able to use it to promote yourself. However, Coreupt.com will own the rights to the design for obvious legal reasons and you will not be able to re-sell the design.

You can design it anyway you want.  Drawing on a piece of paper and scan it, illustrator, paint it....whatever you want.  Once we receive the designs then we will transfer it on to a ski layout.

I was thinking about entering this contest, but I've reconsidered that.
The thing that caught my attention was the fact that the work becomes the property of you, (TJ) and Coreupt. Personally, I think thats the biggest scam anyone can offer if they're actually expecting to get half decent graphics. Don't get me wrong TJ, you're one of my favorite riders, I'm super stoked for you and in no way do I mean to offend you, but this won't work if you want good graphics for your skis.

I entered the Faction Design contest because it specifically stated that I got to retain all rights regarding my work. In my opinion, this should be the norm for contests like this, ESPECIALLY if you're not offering financial compensation. It doesn't really matter how much stuff you throw at a designer, a ski design (especially if it is going to be mass produced) is worth at least $2000, $3000+ if you expect to receive full rights to the design.

It's sick that you guys are trying to involve the public in your designs and I think thats a really cool concept and definitely heading in the right direction; but you guys are doing it wrong, and horribly wrong at that. I strongly urge you to reconsider your contest.

I've already designed an entry for this contest, and I really hope I can enter it, because I'm really stoked on what I was able to come up with. However, as long as the fine print doesn't change, I will not enter.

THAT GRAPHIC IS AWESOME! I want that on my skis. The different shades of blue and the design that's both attention grabbing and obscure is so cool. Good job on that.

Obsessedwski, I took a closer look and that really looks a lot like something Prior might want to buy off you for next season. They have a design for this season which they call the Haida Eagle and they offer it on their skis and boards as you can pick a top-sheet from different options. Prior is a Whistler company that is fairly small, but I think they'd love to buy that design because it compliments the native style while changing it up.

An adjustment is being made to the disclaimer on TJSCHILLER.com. The winning design will become property of TJ Schiller and Coreupt. All other submitted designs that are NOT chosen will remain property of the original artist.

 Obsessedwski, you nailed it on the head, and have some legit graphics to back up your concerns.

I don't think changing the fine print in that way changes anything. You still don't retain ownership of your design, nor are you financially compensated for it. But that's not important to everyone, its still a cool idea. unfortunately, it will probably drive away the most talented and capable individuals.


I like the skis with TJs face personally . :)

shouldn't you be happy your ski designs are on there? 2000 bucks? that's way too much for a ski design, I heard K2 pays 400 bucks and they are a huge corporation

Well if you actually knew how much work goes into designing something, you wouldn't be saying that. I spend at minimum 10 hours on a design from research to planning it out etc.

Where are you getting this info from? $400 for a design is dirt cheap, Faction paid out $500 for their design contest plus a pair of skis. If indeed K2 pays their designers that poorly (which I highly doubt) I'm surprised K2 gets graphics to put on their skis year after year.

The average design cost for a T-shirt can be anywhere from 150 to 500 plus royalties, depending on company size and the production rate. For skis, especially big brands like K2 where they're producing skis numbering in the thousands, its totally fair to be charging $1500, 2000. I think other designers here will back me up on that. Again, it depends from work to work and I'm not saying that I would charge every company $2000 for a ski design, but I think what I said originally is fair.

I suggest you research a bit about what you post beforehand.

I have to agree here. This industry has a terrible habit of grossly underpaying (if at all) artists and very talented individuals who work very hard on projects like this.

I find it reasonable that artists are a bit taken back or reluctant to submit when CoreUpt likely pays its janitors at least a  minimum wage to do their job and here the artists' compensation is "being cool."

I think CoreUpt is a large enough company to reasonably compensate these artists and show they respect their art. It's just the professional thing to do - contest or not.

Accordingly changing the fine print to compensate the winner is the thing to do here and it's definitely not too late. Just an oversight - that's all.

Just my two cents.
