Deduct up to $1,000 from taxes for skiing? I'll take that!

Have you guys seen this? If it was passed, it would help people pay for skis and lift tickets! That'd be sick.

The idea comes from gym memberships and stuff, but "exercise equipment" could count.

Yes, the last time it was updated was in 2015 on the congress website, but you can see that cosponsors have been added recently

interesting, i'm about it - but buying a pass, like a gym membership, will most likely be written off as some sort of luxury/leisure thing.

or just smoke cigarettes - heard that keeps u thin and tasty

They define fitness facility as:
"(ii) which is not a private club owned and operated by its members,

(iii) which does not offer golf, hunting, sailing, or riding facilities,"

Ski resorts sound like a gray area at best.

most ski resorts are private owned and now have a golf course so that means this will never happen.

"E(iii) - in the case of any item of sports equipment (other than exercise equipment), with respect to so much of the amount paid for such item as does not exceed $250."

I think that means you could deduct $250 from a pair of skis or bindings. There is still hope.

Most ski resorts are not private- which presumably means private as in club membership required- ski resorts allow day passes.

Ski resorts are not owned or operated by their members. They're operated by paid employees as a part of a corporative environment, and usually owned by ridiculously rich people.

I've never heard of a ski resort offering golf... maybe dirt biking in the summer, but nothing else.. Who offers golf? Surely only the really expensive resorts.

ah good point with the membership thing. i was thinking private equity.

as for golf, the east coast is full of resorts that have a golf course on property now to keep the money coming in all year round. snow making is expensive and its the ice coast so it makes sense to offer summer activities. and dirtbiking? you mean mountain biking.
